Summary

The cancelation ofBosch: Legacytook many fans by surprise back in September 2024, and a petition was swiftly launched to keep Harry Bosch’s story going. Amazon refused to call it a cancelation and claimed it was a planned hand-off to the upcomingBallardspin-off. However, this so-called ‘fitting end’ toBosch: Legacywas contradicted by Mitzi Roberts, the real-life inspiration for Renee Ballard, and Amazon has some serious explaining to do.

Mitzi Roberts is a writer and executive producer onBallard, and she’s worked on the Bosch-verse as a technical advisor for many years, and has a close working relationship with Bosch creator, Michael Connelly. Roberts claimstheBallardspin-off was supposed to run alongsideBosch: Legacyinstead of replacing it,

Amazon Lied About The Nature Of Bosch: Legacy’s Abrupt End And They Need To Respond To The Fans

Amazon letMichael Connellyannouncethe end ofBosch: Legacyback in September 2024, and he called it a ‘fitting end’ to Harry Bosch’s main story. Amazon were clearly behind this attempt to trick the fans into thinking this was a planned transition totheBallardspin-off. In reality,Bosch: Legacywas canceled, and the creative team weren’t given the opportunity to end Harry Bosch’s solo story in the right way.Mitzi Roberts confirmed this to be the case when she addressed fans in a post on theBosch PitFacebook group:

I can’t say much other than we’re all very bummed about the decision. That said, hopefully, you’ll love the Ballard series too. As you said, it was written to compliment Bosch, never to replace it.

Bosch: Legacyseason 3 was supposed to lay the groundwork for the expansion of Harry Bosch’s universe.Titus Welliver’s contract forBallard’s first seasonwas only three episodes, because he still had plenty of his own cases to solve inBosch: Legacy.Harry Bosch and Renee Ballardwill work onthe Library of Lost Soulscold cases in the spin-off, and in turn, future seasons ofBosch: Legacycould also have featured the pair teaming up.Ballardis going to be a completely different show toBosch: Legacyand it won’t be a replacement. The fans were fine with that because, as Mitzi Roberts said, ‘it was supposed to complement Bosch, not replace it’. Fans are now preparing themselves for Harry Bosch-lite moving forward, as opposed to bonus special appearances from the legendary ex-LAPD detective alongside his main story.

Amazon dropped the ball when they underestimatedBosch: Legacy’s huge fanbase. They clearly didn’t expect so many questions to be asked about why they canceled the show, and they figured the fans would accept 10 seasons and move on.It might have been an easier sell to endBosch: Legacyif they hadn’t already invested in developing two spin-offs to go alongside it.Filming on theBallardspin-off has been completed, butthe Jerry Edgar spin-offis dead in the water now. Amazon promised so much to the Bosch fans, and they flattered to deceive at the most vital time.
