Respawn is reportedly cooking up a major overhaul ofApex Legendsin response to the game falling below EA’s expectations. When it comes to aspects ofApex Legendsthat need a big change, there’s one that immediately comes to mind.

Apex Legends' Season 24is another season that reworks a major aspect of gameplay, similar to Season 16 and Season 20. While these updates have all had positive impacts on the game, they demonstrate a shift away from more content-rich seasons. Fans could once expect every season to bring at least a new Legend and a change to one of the game’s maps, with a new weapon and/or new map every few seasons. This hasn’t been the case recently; only 3 new Legends have been released since Season 16, and map changes have slowed to a trickle. That’s not to say the shift towards Legend/System reworks isn’t welcome, but it’s nonetheless led many to perceive the game as increasingly dry.

Apex Legends Needs To Ditch Legend Tokens In Its 2.0 Update

In a recent EA financial call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson mentioned that Respawn isdeveloping a ‘2.0’ update toApex Legends, coming in response to the game failing to meet expectations. This won’t come as much of a surprise to veteran fans as, while the game is still great fun,Apexhas grown stagnant for many—a problem not helped by the swathes of controversy it found itself in during 2024.

There’s a lot that could be done to improve the game within an overhaul update, but there’s one clear target for deletion—that beingApex’s Legend Tokens. Legend Tokens are one of the game’s many currencies, and they are used for purchasing new Legends and little else. These Tokens have long become a relic of a different game, and it would probably be best to ditch them in a 2.0 update toApex.

Legend Tokens Have Become Bloat

Players gain Legend Tokens by leveling up, allowing them to slowly unlockApex’s roster of Legends. When starting out, this allows for an experience that’s a little grindy, but nothing too bad in the context of live-service games. However, with Respawn adding fewer Legends in the past two years, players have built up vast stockpiles of Tokens, which can only be spent on Legends or the occasional weapon recolor.

As hoards of Legend Tokens gather dust,Apexonly gains more currencies and collectibles. The game recently added Exotic Shards, a new currency that stands in addition to Legend Tokens, Apex Coins, Crafting Materials, and Heirloom Shards, as well as more items to collect, with Mythic weapon skins recently being added in Season 24. Legend Tokens haven’t gained any additional use, however, leading them to feel increasingly obsolete; they’re practically useless to the majority of regular players and serve as an inconvenience to new players.

Legends Should Be Made Free, Or Currencies Should Be Reworked

Legend Tokens should be removed from the game to cut down on its bloat, and it’s not as if the game makes much of its revenue from players buying Legends anyway. However, allowing all Legends to be accessible from the get-go may overwhelm new players, and it would deprive them of a goal to strive for. One solution could be to have Legend unlocks require Crafting Materials, or to have them tied to in-game progress (such as number of kills or amount of damage on an account).

Apexcould also introduce a single-player campaign, or a dedicated PvE mode, to gate character unlocks. This could even involve special levels where a player tries out a locked Legend, unlocking them upon completion.
