A former DCEU cast member revealed that they’re not upset over the franchise ending. However, they would be willing to reprise theirDCrole, but they don’t see how that would be possible.
Aquamanco-starred Patrick Wilson as Orm the Ocean Master, the half-brother of Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry and ruler of Atlantis. While Orm was the primary antagonist of the first movie, he became a reluctant ally in the sequel,Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, assisting Arthur in his quest to defeat Black Manta. While Orm was redeemed and allowed to live free on the condition that he remains hidden (Atlantis was told he died),Aquaman 2marked the endof Orm’s journey as the final installment of the DCEU franchise. James Gunn has now rebooted the franchise and launched the new DC Universe, but Wilson isn’t distraught about theAquamanfilm series' sudden end.
During an interview withVariety, Wilson was asked if he hoped there would be more than twoAquamanmovies. Wilson responded by revealing that he doesn’t think he hoped there would be more, explaining that he doesn’t know where else Orm’s story could go. While he enjoyed working on theAquamanmovies and wouldn’t be opposed to a third film, he’s content letting that ‘ship sail.’
Was I hoping it would be more? I don’t think so. I mean, I say this as a guy who’s done several “Insidious” movies, several “Conjurings,” a couple “Aquaman.” It’s not like there’s a stigma to me against sequels. It’s just when you look at the structure of Orm — bad guy in the first one, basically a good guy in the second one — I don’t know where else he goes. I wasn’t signed on for a third. There was no frustration. I don’t know where the story would go. I wouldn’t be opposed to it. We had a great time shooting the second one. I had the best time. I feel really fortunate to have my two forays into superheroes be these bizarre characters of Night Owl Two [in “Watchmen”] and Ocean Master. It’s strange and odd and weird, and I dig that. I’m not going to lie. So, I’m happy with that ship sailing.
As fans know, the DCU is bringing back some actors and characters from the defunct DCEU. Actors fromThe Suicide Squad,Peacemaker, andBlue Beetlewill reprise their respective roles, though the canonicity of the films themselves is limited to specific events mentioned in new DCU projects. So, when asked if he would be willing to return to DC, Wilson said he would, depending on the story and creative team. However, he added that he doesn’t know how Orm could fit in with the new DCU and noted that they “had a good run” withAquaman.
Would I go back to it? I mean, if it’s good. Who’s directing it? What’s the story? He’s such an odd character. I don’t know where you just drop him in. It’s so strange to me. Also, they have taken the DC Universe in a whole different way. We had a good run. It’s okay. So, there’s not one ounce of, ‘Is there anything?’ I would totally play again if it’s worth it, but I just don’t know how.
Momoa is joining the DCU as LoboinSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. So, Wilson could play a different character if he still questions how Orm could fit into the rebooted DCU. Momoa is currently the only DCEU actor to join the DCU as a different character, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be the last.
Still, Wilson is seemingly content leaving theAquamanfranchise behind. While some DC fans continue demanding Warner Bros. ‘restore the SnyderVerse,’ the franchise’s actors appear to be a peace moving on. Of course, others believethe DCU needs a clean slateand that Gunn should have rebooted the franchise entirely. But much like Wilson’s time with theAquamanfranchise, that ship has sailed.
