Arcanewas among the most successful animated TV series on Netflix. Surprisingly, despite the good ratings and positive reception, it ended after Season 2 and one of its lead stars admitted they were surprised by the turn of events.
Arcane, an animated series inspired byLeague of Legends, aired for two seasons on Netflix. Many loved it for its impressive visuals and compelling storyline. However, despite the demand for more seasons, the production team decided to wrap up the story after Season 2. One of its lead stars admitted they thought they would be doing another season, so they were surprised when they realized the series was ending.
Ella Purnell, who voiced the fan-favorite and complicated character Jinx in the series, admitted that she didn’t expect the project would be done after two seasons. She only realized it was ending days before her last recording after she read the script. “Well, I wouldn’t know if it was going to be over. No one told me,” Purnell said at MegaCon (via ScreenRant). “This is true. Until I read the script, which was like a few days before my last recording session.“According to Purnell, she was shocked at the realization thatArcaneSeason 2 was the final season. She had to reach out to her agent to confirm it because she was expecting a third season and the latter only confirmed her fears – the series was ending after Season 2.
And I read the script and I was like, what? We’re doing another season, right? And I texted my agent and he was like,' oh, no, no, let me check in on that.' And then he goes, ‘OK, so actually, it’s done. I didn’t know that.’
Reflecting on her stint inArcane, Purnell said it “didn’t really change” her life because they did the recording over so many years and would only record once a month for four hours. She added that she somewhat forgot what happened in between and there was “a little more pressure.” Whenever she returned to the booth to record, she had mixed feelings of excitement and anxiety, fearing that she “forgot how to do everything.““You’realways worried that you forgot how to act. But then, yeah, you kind of get back for it,” she explained.Showrunner Christian Link previously sharedwhy they endedArcaneafter two seasons. According to him, it was always how they planned the series since they didn’t want to “overdo it.” The series creator added that they didn’t want to stretch the project and run out of creative juices to the point that they would not be able to give justice to the story they intended to share.
Arcanefocuses on the conflict between the utopian city of Piltover and the oppressed underground district of Zaun. It also highlighted Vi (Hailee Seinfeld) and Jinx’s (Purnell) sibling relationship. They were so close but had a falling out, leading the once innocent and naive girl Jinx to turn rogue and become an unhinged and deadly criminal. The series ended with Jinx sacrificing herself to save Vi. It wasn’t shown whether she died or survived after she fell from a ledge. The vague finale was open for fans' interpretation and the director confirmed the open ending. “So, that’s I guess, where I’ll leave it,“Linke said about Jinx’s fate. AlthoughArcaneSeason 2 was the series finale, the creator promised more spinoffs.
