Summary
Avengers: Doomsdaycast member Tom Holland has multiple projects filming this year, so Marvel Studios may take a page fromThe Mandalorian’s playbook to accommodate the actor’s busy schedule.
Avengers: Doomsdayis scheduled to begin production in March 2025, unless rumors of filming potentially being postponed due to an unfinished script are correct. While Robert Downey Jr. is the only officially announcedAvengers: Doomsdaycast member, Holland’s Spider-Man is expected to play a key role in the much-anticipated film. However, Holland also stars inSpider-Man 4and Christopher Nolan’sThe Odyssey, both of which start filming this year. Juggling 3 high-profile big-budget blockbusters won’t be easy, butAvengers: Doomsdayhas seemingly found a simple solution.
How Will Avengers: Doomsday Accodomate Tom Holland’s Busy Schedule?
Reputable scooperDaniel Richtmanreports thatAvengers: Doomsdaymay use a stunt double to film some of Holland’s Spider-Man scenes.According to Ritchman, this is due to Holland being busy filming Nolan’sThe Odyssey. This likely means fans can expect to see a few more scenes of Spider-Man with his mask on than usual. Of course, using a double to stand in for a busy actor is not an uncommon practice in Hollywood, particularly if the performer is playing a character with a head and/or face covering.
For example,Pedro Pascal wasn’t on set for much ofThe Mandalorianseason 3despite playing the titular bounty hunter Din Djarin. The Mandalorianseason 3 filming coincided with production on HBO’sThe Last of Usseason 1, in which Pascal plays Joel, a role that requires his face to be visible. Fortunately,The Mandalorianteam didn’t need to wait for Pascal to complete his work onThe Last of Usbecause Din Djarin is always seen with his helmet on in theStar Warsshow’s third season. Therefore, a double could film scenes in the Mandalorian armor while Pascal primarily did voice-over work for his role.
Some fans may be pleased to hear Holland’s Spider-Man will need to keep his mask on more than usual. One common criticism of superhero movies, at least in their early years, was that the titular heroes would take off their masks too often.Tobey Maguire’sSpider-Manmovieswere arguably the most guilty of this trope. The most reasonable explanation for this is that studios often pay large fortunes to sign these actors onto superhero movies, with their salary increasing if they’ve been attached to the role for a long period, so they understandably want to showcase the actor they paid a lot of money for as often as possible. Still, many fans would prefer if superheroes weren’t so careless with how often they unmask in the movies.
On the other hand,Avengers: Doomsdayis expected to be an emotional filmdue to Downey Jr.’s involvement as Doctor Doom. Many of the Avengers have a long history with Tony Stark, so seeing an adversary with his appearance is likely going to pack a punch. Holland’s Spider-Man arguably had the deepest relationship with Stark, so fans are eager to see how he will react to essentially confronting an evil variant of his former mentor. Assuming such a scene occurs inAvengers: Doomsday, many fans will be disappointed if Holland isn’t on set for this reunion. Hopefully, this won’t be the case.
Avengers: Doomsdayis scheduled to be released in theaters on June 19, 2025.
