Summary
Avengers: DoomsdayandSecret Warsfeature Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom as the primary antagonist. Now, a well-known scooper may have dropped hints at Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom making an impression by killing a familiar MCU villain.
Avengers: Doomsdayand Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom were the result of Marvel Studios' scrapped plans forThe Kang Dynasty. Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror was initially the overarching villain of the Multiverse Saga and the next twoAvengersmovies. Of course,Marvel Studios fired Majors from the Kang roleand reportedly has no intention of bringing him back. This means the MCU must introduce Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom quickly, as the next twoAvengersmovies are only one and two years away, and there are hints that Marvel Studios has found a way to immediately establish Doctor Doom as the greatest threat Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have ever faced.
Notable scooperMyTimeToShineHellorecently claimedThanos will return to the MCU sooner than fans expected. While MyTimeToShineHello didn’t provide details on when Thanos would allegedly return, one Twitter user asked if the project in question isAvengers: Doomsday. The scooper replied with the “shifty eyes” emoji, which could be interpreted as saying the user who suggested Thanos returning inAvengers: Doomsdayis on to something. Another user predicted Doctor Doom would rip Thanos' heart out in a post-credits scene, which prompted the same “shifty eyes” response from MyTimeToShineHello.
MyTimeToShineHello has a reputation for being right as often as they’re wrong. However, there are reasons to believe their claim about Thanos returning might be true. This isn’t the first time Thanos' potential MCU return has been raised, and actorJosh Brolin has expressed a willingnessto reprise the role under the right circumstances. There is also precedent for Thanos meeting his demise at the hands of Doctor Doom. In Jonathan Hickman’s 2015Secret Warscomic book story, “God Emperor Doom” rips out Thanos' skeleton after the Mad Titan refuses Doom’s offer to make him a baron in the battleworld. ConsideringAvengers: DoomsdayandSecret Warsare expected to partially adapt this comic, perhaps a variation of this gruesome death will be seen in the MCU.
It’s understandable why Marvel Studios might want Doctor Doom to kill Thanos. While comic book fans don’t need to be reminded of how formidable a foe Doctor Doom can be, audiences who are only familiar with MCU movies may not know how much of a threat he is to the Avengers. Rumors claimDowney Jr.’s Doctor Doom appears inThe Fantastic Four: First Steps, and if this is true, having him kill Thanos in a post-credits scene would firmly establish Doom as a threat unlike any before.
Avengers: Doomsdayis scheduled to be released in theaters on July 26, 2025.
