Avowedpresents many ways to deal loads of damage, whether emphasizing a Fighter, Ranger, or Wizard build. However, the latter yields some truly fun and diverse ways to conjure up pain on enemies, especially through spell-boosting magic books known as Grimoires.
There are many Unique and more common varieties to sort through, each of which offers a handful of spells that can be swiftly summoned. With so many spells, and countless combinations to experiment with, pinning down the best for one’s build or circumstance can be tricky. This list will highlight the overall strongest and most useful Grimoires to unleash.
Bristling Frost
Level 5
Players will likely find the Grimoire of Elements early on, which, despite its wide range of elemental blasts, runs on relatively weaker spells. Thankfully, those seeking a diversity of attack spells will find this to be the ‘greater’ option.
With fairly potent fire, ice, and electric spells, the Grimoire of Greater Elements covers most of its bases offensively — as well asenvironment traversal and reaching hidden secrets. Players can find this Grimoire in a chest behindMagran’s Assay;a towering building inDawnshore.
Missile Salvo
Level 10
While there are a few notable Unique Grimoires inAvowed, only a couple can truly be considered top-tier, with one of the few being this book, once held by renowned elementalists from the Ixamitl Plains. The Grimoire stresses pummeling foes with its range of potent spells, while further tilting fights in the player’s favor with the protective Arcane Veil.
Using each of these disruptive spells wisely can certainly turn the tide of a heated battle — as the moves that can hit within an area of effect, knock back foes, and cause ignition. Players can get their hands on this Grimoire near the skeleton of the Crazed Pyromancer, to thenortheast of the Fractured Shoreand a bit southeast of Berath’s Gateway.
Blackbow
Level 15
As its name illustrates, this Grimoire is able to pepper enemies with great intensity from a distance. The three attack spells included are all capable of melting targets from at least a medium distance — and even the spell thatisn’ta pure attack sets the stage for precise projectile shots with Blackbow.
This handy bow strikes targets with strong poison-laced arrows that can pierce through enemies once it’s ranked.
Freezing Pillar
Those who favor freezing enemies dead in their tracks and shattering them to bits (with the help of skills likeCharge in the Fighter’s Tree) will get ample use out of this one. The Grimoire of Rime covers most of the solid ice-based spells, with even the lesser ones capable of disrupting whole mobs and doing loads of damage.
To round things out among the lineup of pure damage (and water traversal) spells, Bristling Frost surrounds the player in a protective frost that yields damage reduction and freezes those that attempt to cross it. Players can buy this Grimoire (and many other great ones available) from theMerchant at the Thirdborn North Gate.
While lacking a bit in terms of raw power, this Grimoire excels in its varied lineup of spells that each prove useful in their own way. Melee-focused mages can utilize the amped-up spears and bows of Spirit Lance and Blackbow, while vulnerable, stealthier Wizards can use Arcane Veil to ward off aggro.
To top it off, there’s Grimoire Snap, whichexcels in its damage dealingand ability to throw off attackers with stun and knockback. With its ability to deflect and ward off offensives, this can be considered a survivalist’s Grimoire, and an effective one at that.
It can be fun summoning a steady stream of electricity and stunning all its path, especially when this evolves into chains of lightning going through several foes. Jolting Touch serves as the thematically-fitting spell here, as its beam produces plenty of deadly sparks.
Players can ensure targets are sufficiently stunned by following this up with Grimoire Snap, and then swoop in for the kill with Spirit Lance and Missile Salvo. All but the toughest baddies will find it hard to gain an edge or even find their footing when spamming this potent Grimoire.
Arcane Seal
Level 20
Given this already-potent Grimoire starts at Superb quality, players can overwhelm enemies with these strong spells coupled with its swift casting. Ability cost and cooldown time are roughlyhalfof the common variety Grimoire, and the book canfurtherbe upgraded after collecting enoughBlackwood/Glasswood Branches, Cave Coral, and Bloodwrithe Toadstools.
Players will have a near-constant stream of resources to cast their powerful spells on this Grimoire. This is thanks to Arcane Seal,which produces Essencewhile stepping into its circle. Players can find this coveted Grimoire inShatterscarp— in the same room Ryngrim resides in during the ‘Face Your Fears’ quest in the middle of the game. The final rank of Grimoire Mastery is needed to get the most out of this, but it’s worth the investment.
Meteor Shower
This book is highly appealing with its lineup of highly-powerful and useful spells. While Pull of Eora can draw aggro and set up closer, vulnerable targets to hit, Freezing Pillar and Meteor Shower can finish the job, as both pummel baddies with loads of ice and fire damage respectively.
