Naval battles are a new feature in theLike a Dragonseries. As players would expect from the outlandish RPG series, ship battles inLike a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaiihave a lot of depth and customization options. There’s plenty to focus on, from recruiting and leveling a crew to buying, upgrading, and fitting new weapons.
Players can equip a few different weapon types for their ship. Machine gun-type weapons, for example, can be fitted to fire from the front of the ship. Cannons are the player’s broadside option, firing from the port and starboard sides of the ship only. There are still quite a few different options even within this category though. 12Bronze Cannon
Better Broadsides
The first option players will have available to them to upgrade their ship weapons is simply to purchase them from thechange equipmentmenu at any lighthouse or harbor. Bronze cannons are the first and cheapest upgrade option that players can buy. They’re not spectacular, but they’re better than basic cannons, and players have to purchase the bronze tier if they want the silver and gold tiers later.
11Silver Cannon
Mid-Tier Basic Cannons
The silver cannon is the mid-tier upgrade for the basic cannon. It does a bit more damage in return for a steeper cost of $4000. Most players will start with the cannons as a solid offensive option for their ship, but there’s a good argument for saving the gold on these upgrades and skipping to the higher-damage alternative weapons like the energy cannon as soon as possible.

The Best Basic Cannon Upgrade
The Gold Cannon is the highest tier of upgrade for the basic cannon. As well as having to unlock all the previous tiers first, this upgrade itself is quite pricey. It does do the most damage of the basic cannons, and has a longer range than previous upgrade tiers, but players should consider grinding some bounties orhunting for treasureand rushing straight for the energy cannons instead.
9Silver Flamethrower
Stronger Flames
The Flamethrowers are a high-damage, short-range offensive option for the player’s broadside weapons. A good early strategy for players without higher-tier weapons is to put regular cannons on one side of the ship for ranged damage, and Flamethrowers on the other side for higher damage when up close with other ships. The silver tier upgrade for the flamethrowers increases the range and damage of the flames slightly.
8Gold Flamethrower
Strongest Flamethrower
The Golden Flamethrower is the strongest flamethrower upgrade, and the 1400 damage over the three-second burn is comparable even to the high-damage energy cannon. Like other flamethrowers, players still have to be relatively close to other ships to use the Golden Flamethrower effectively.
This upgrade tier does have a longer range than previous tiers, but it still won’t compare to the range of cannons or lasers. It’s debatable whether the flamethrowers are worth using compared to other longer-range options, but they’re perfect for players who like to get up close and personal.
7Shark Cannon
Julie’s Creations
Partway through chapter two, players will run into Julie, the returning mechanic character from theLike a Dragonseries. This time she’s here to craft gear for both Majima and the Goromaru. Once players have access to her workshop, they’ll be able to start crafting new ship weapons, including new cannons, though they’ll need to assemble the required materials.
The shark cannons dealcold damageand are able to freeze enemies in place. Players will need some regular (50), quality (30), and superb components (10), as well as sharkstone (10), to craft them.
6Egesta Cannon
Poison Barrage
Egesta Cannons can also be crafted at Julie’s workshop once it’s unlocked. These cannons fire two contaminated shells at once, dealing poison damage to enemy vessels. Poison and fire damage both deal damage over time inLike a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and combining both types of damage can drain eventougher enemy ships’health bars quickly.
Players will need regular, quality, and superb components and ten of a crafting item called ethereal egesta to get the poison cannons.
5Energy Cannon
The Best Purchasable Cannon Type
The Energy Cannon is the best type of cannon that players don’t have to craft themselves. The high-damage rapid-fire energy balls do more damage to enemy ships than anything except the craftable Laser Cannons. They also have a good range, so they’re a reliable broadside as long as players can line up their shots.
They do come with a hefty price tag for this level of power though, and players will have to wait until they can grind some bounties, find some treasure, or complete somePirate Coliseum battlesto get the $15,000 necessary.
4Super Shark Cannon
Golden Sharks
The Super Shark Cannon upgrade for the Shark Cannon turns the freezing shell into a three-shell-per-cannon volley that’s capable of building up freeze on enemies quickly. These can be a useful utility weapon to have on one side of the Goromaru, with an accompanying high-damage weapon like the Laser Cannons on the other side.
Thecold damage can freeze enemies in placefor a full hit from the high-damage side. Players will need more superb components (20) and more sharkstone (20) for this upgraded version.
3Super Egesta Cannon
Stronger Poison Double Shots
The more powerful version of the poison cannons, the Super Egesta Cannon, can output more poison shells at once for more damage over time to enemy ships. They’re a good option if players want to focus totally on damage over time, but it’s questionable whether this is more effective than loading up on damage with other cannon types.
Players will need to collect more superb components (20) and more ethereal egesta (20) to craft the Super Egesta Cannon.
