Okami 2caught the world by surprise when it was revealed during the climax of The Game Awards in December 2024. In the firstOkamigame, players controlled the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu, who took the form of a white wolf to fight back against dark demons that plagued the land. For most of her journey, Amaterasu is joined by the diminutive artist Issun, who provided guidance and some comic relief. With her Divine Instruments and Brush Techniques that can call upon various elements like wind, water, and nature,Okamiis widely considered one of the best titles touse drawing as a game mechanic.
Over two months since the surprise reveal ofOkami 2, Capcom discussed a few more details about the game. In anIGN interview, Kamiya was joined by Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata. The group confirmed thatOkami 2will be a direct sequel to the firstOkamititle. Although Okami already had a follow-up game in 2012’sOkamidenfor the DS, the ending ofOkamisaw both Amaterasu and Waka board a vessel for the Celestial Plain following the defeat of the dark deity called Yami.

In short, the ending ofOkamileft plenty of potential for a sequel, despiteOkamidentaking place some years afterward. Hirabayashi stated that, despiteOkamiden’s mixed reception, the company is aware of fans who enjoyed the game. However, Kamiya and Hirabayashi confirmed that the highly-anticipated sequel is still in very early development, which means fans will have to wait a while before Capcom can share more information aboutwhat to expect inOkami 2.
Additionally, the group stated thatOkami 2would be made using Capcom’s patented RE Engine. First used with 2017’sResident Revel 7: Biohazard, RE Engine has since been used for other titles likeDevil May Cry 5, Street Fighter 6, andthe upcomingMonster Hunter Wilds. The RE Engine’s successor, Codename REX, will be rolled out in segments. Additionally, some features will be integrated into the current RE Engine.
As one of the most belovedgames that Kamiya directed,Okami’s story and sumi-e ink graphics are fondly remembered by gamers. Only time will tell when Capcom will offer more information aboutOkami 2.
