Summary
The team behindCities: Skylines 2has revealed that fans shouldn’t expect the simulation game’s console ports to come out before Summer 2025. Developed by Colossal Order,Cities: Skylines 2was released in October 2023 for PC gamers exclusively despite being previously planned to come out on PlayStation and Xbox on the same day.
The wait forCities: Skylines 2to arrive on consoleshas been a prolonged one, to say the least. Its divisive launch state on PC is often considered as one of the factors responsible for publisher Paradox Interactive being more careful with its console ports. After first being delayed to June 2024, they were postponed indefinitely after the devs couldn’t get the game’s technical issues down to a satisfactory level within the given timeframe. Most recently, theCities: Skylines 2team gave a fresh report on the console versions, giving players a clearer idea of when they might be able to expect the rollout.
In anew poston its Steam page,Cities: Skylines 2announced that “steady progress” was being made on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S counterparts, with the team’s “core focus” being the ports' performance and stability. They also shared that, despite the project moving forward, there were still certain things that stopped the ports in their current state from reaching the “level of quality” targeted by the devs. With that in mind, they confirmed that console versions will “not have a release before summer.” Further, they stated that subsequent information would follow whenCities: Skylines 2’s in-development portsare close to a launch-friendly state.
Cities: Skylines 2 Console Release Update
As part of the same post, the devs at Colossal Order shared that the Asset Editor feature was also progressing despite turning out to be more challenging than originally thought. In addition to that, the Finland-based studio directed attention towards the planned celebrations for thetenth anniversary ofCities: Skylines, the highly successful 2015 original, which falls on March 10.
Over a year and four months after release,Cities: Skylines 2is still strugglingin terms of user feedback, with just 53% positive reviews from more than 48,000 players, leading to a “Mixed” rating. More seriously, its console ports are also nowhere to be found and, after the latest status update, still seem to be quite some time away from launch. On this front, Colossal Order would undoubtedly wish to make amends and deliver the game on consoles as had been its goal since the get-go.
