Cyberpunk 2077may have gotten a bad rap when it was first released in 2020 due to its shoddy technical state, but there really isn’t another game just like it. Although there is no shortage of sci-fi video games out there, it cannot be said that there are a lot in the cyberpunk genre specifically. Indeed, the amount of AAA action-adventure games that take place in neon-drenched,Blade Runner-style settings are surprisingly limited. Night City,Cyberpunk 2077’s dystopian sci-fi setting, is perhaps the best example of such a location in the world of video games. The fictional Californian city feels like a living, breathing place that has its own character.

Gamers who are craving more dystopian, sci-fi video games need not despair, because the Polish developer CD Projekt Red is working on a sequel toCyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion. There is, however, a catch to this: the game is still years away from being released. CD Projekt Red is currently busy makingThe Witcher 4, which has only just been announced. Considering thatThe Witcher 4will probably not be launched until 2026at the earliest, it’s very likely thatCyberpunk 2077’s sequel may not even come out during this console generation. Fortunately, there is a new game from an ex-Grand Theft Autodeveloper that may satiateCyberpunk 2077fans who are impatiently waiting for the highly-anticipated sequel.

MindsEye Seems to Share a Lot in Common With Cyberpunk 2077

MindsEye is a New Sci-Fi Game from Ex-GTA Developer Leslie Benzies

Build a Rocket Boy, a newly-established game developer from Scotland, made a surprise appearance during Sony’s recent PlayStation State of Play, and announced its first-ever game,MindsEye. This upcoming project is being published by IO Interactive, the studio behindHitmanandKane & Lynch. It is also beingdirected by Leslie Benzies, the former Rockstar North president and seasoned game designer who played a key role in the development of many classicGrand Theft Autogames, fromGTA 3all the way toGTA 5.

MindsEyeis a story-driven, third-person shooter that’s set in a near future America. Although it is slightly more grounded in reality compared toCyberpunk 2077, it is still very much a sci-fi game.Like Night City, the world ofMindsEyeis filled with murderous robots, cyborgs, high-tech experimentation, and neural implant technology. The game covers a lot of the same themes asCyberpunk 2077, as well, such as human greed, technology’s impact on people’s daily lives, the blurring of the lines between corporations and governments, the threat of artificial intelligence, and so on.

Build a Rocket Boy labelsMindsEyeas an action-adventure thriller, and looking at the cinematic reveal trailer for the game, that seems like an apt description.MindsEyefollows Jacob Diaz, a former soldier who is haunted by flashbacks of a covert mission that went terribly wrong. LikeV fromCyberpunk 2077, Diaz has a neural implant inside his brain, called the MindsEye. This one, however, doesn’t let him talk with a Keanu Reeves hologram. Instead, the MindsEye serves a mysterious purpose, and it contains fragmented memories of Diaz’s past.

MindsEye is Going to Be Part of a Game Platform Called Everywhere

Gameplay-wise,MindsEyeseems to be an interesting cross betweenCyberpunk 2077andGrand Theft Auto. As can be seen in the game’s reveal trailer, it has lots of chase sequences and third-person cover shooting segments, and even features a drone companion of some kind. Additionally,MindsEyeis intended to be part ofa broader game platform calledEverywhere, which is also being developed by Build a Rocket Boy. Judging by what’s been revealed of it so far,Everywhereseems to be like a more realistic-looking version ofRobloxorFortnite, in that it includes several games within a game. It’s not exactly clear ifEverywherewill be launched alongsideMindsEye, or how games will be implemented inside it, but players will find out when Build a Rocket Boy’s action-adventure thriller is released in summer 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
