At the heart ofCyberpunk2077lies the quickly evolving nature of tech and what happens when corporations become the ruling bodies in society.Cyberpunk2077explores themes of corporate greed and the lengths people will go to cement their place as legends. The game’s narrative is one of the many things that makes it so compelling, which has warranted a now in-development sequel.
CodenamedProjectOrion,Cyberpunk2077’s follow-up is largely a mystery at the moment. From the characters to the setting, CD Projekt Red has yet to reveal any concrete information. The story ofCyberpunk2077may be kept under wraps at the moment, but the franchise’s themes of unchecked corporate power are bound to continue. One corporation that perfectly illustrates such themes is Militech. The weapons manufacturing megacorporation is a force to be reckoned with, and ifProjectOrionwants to expand upon the tech giant, Konami’sMetalGearfranchise could serve as a strong source of inspiration.
Project Orion Could Learn From Metal Gear’s Titular Mechs
The central focus ofMetalGearlies in the mechs that share the franchise’s namesake. In the series, Metal Gear are bipedal tanks that are equipped with nuclear weapons. While the themes oftheMetalGearfranchisediffer fromCyberpunk2077, the shared inclusion of high-powered tech serves as an interesting connection.ProjectOrionis bound to explore the established lore of the franchise further, and taking note of nuclear-powered mechs could serve as a perfect starting point for some of the sequel’s villains.
Militech’s biggest enemy and competitor is the Arasaka Corporation.
As Militech’s Influence Grows, the Danger Increases
Being a private military contractor, Militech makes its profits by pushing destruction. It’s a system that promotes violence and power at any cost, so it would only make sense for the corporation to have an interest in harnessing nuclear weaponry for itself.Militech is a fascinating point inCyberpunk2077’s lore, and its horrifying power could be put on full display ifProjectOrionwere to give its story aMetalGear-inspired twist.
As the famous Lord Acton quote goes, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Militech is the perfect template to use to showcase these facets ofCyberpunk2077’s world. Night City sleeps, eats, and breathes power, and Militech choosing to manufacture an army of walking nuclear-powered tanks is not far outside the realm of possibility at all. There is already a mech featured inCyberpunk2077that resembles a Metal Gear. The Minotaur is a bipedal mech that works via remote-control, and it could easily fit inthe world ofMetalGear. If Militech were to upgrade The Minotaur to be nuclear-capable, thenProjectOrionwould have a harrowing threat on its hands.
ProjectOrionis rumored to have a multiplayer mode, but this has yet to be confirmed by CD Projekt Red.
Project Orion May Be Years Away, But Details Will Hopefully Arrive in the Near Future
Now thatCyberpunk2077feels like the game it was intended to be at launch, the prospect of a sequel is incredibly exciting. The game’s tech-centric dystopia can feel downright nightmarish a lot of the time, and seeing how CD Projekt Red plans on diving deeper into that world is compelling to think about. Unfortunately,ProjectOrionis likely several years away at this point.TheWitcher4is nexton CD Projekt Red’s to-do list, but the developer hopefully offers a little bit of insight sometime soon.
Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
It’s unclear ifProjectOrionwill showcase its own version of a nuclear arm’s race, but it could be a really intriguing route to venture down. Militech may not have been the main corporation atthe center of V’s journey, but it would be a great contender for the franchise’s next big antagonist.
