Summary

The developers ofThe Sims 4are actively investigating a save file corruption bug associated with the game’s For Rent expansion pack. ThisSims 4bug has been causing fans of the series serious problems for more than a year, and the team at Maxis is asking for players' help to solve the issue.

The For Rent expansion was originally released on July 12, 2025, becoming the 15th full expansion pack for the game since its launch in the fall of 2014. Featuring highly demanded features likebuilding apartments inThe Sims 4and entering a career as a landlord, the expansion nevertheless earned mostly negative reviews from fans on Steam and other ratings sites around the Internet, in great part due to the large amount of bugs it contained at launch.

The most egregious of these bugs, as reported by many players, caused their existing save files to become irreparably corrupted and unplayable shortly after they installed the expansion, effectively wiping out in-game neighborhoods that fans had been creating and playing in for years. The development team has recently reached out via The Sims Direct Communications Twitter account and assured players that it is still working to resolve the corruption issue withSims 4save files. However, the post also seeks out help from players who have been affected by the corruption bug, asking them to continue to provide any information they can and upload their corrupted files to the official EA Forums to help provide more data for the investigation.

Sims 4 Devs are Still Working to Fix Year-Old Data Corruption Bug

Players have been responding to the social media post in droves, but not exactly in the way that EA and Maxis had asked for. Rather than sharing information about the file corruption bug in the For Rent expansion, the vast majority of replies complain about otherweird bugs plaguingThe Sims 4that the development team has yet to fix. By far, the most common among the bunch is a weather bug that allows rain and snow to fall indoors, making Sims unable to escape the elements and causing them to fall ill. Other persistent problems players are complaining about include lag when the Social Bunny appears, skin and eye textures disappearing in Create-a-Sim mode, and various bugs associated with infants.

Rather than continuing to try to fix bugs that have been in the game for years, some players are starting to suggest that EA and Maxis give up on the game andtake things to the next level withThe Sims 5. Many players were excited after last year’s announcement of Project Rene and were let down when the developers let them know that, not only will it not beThe Sims 5, but there are no current plans to developThe Sims 5at all, with the team instead continuing to expand the existing game universe.
