Summary
A new financial report has shed some light on how manyXbox Series X/Sconsoles have sold, estimating the systems as moving around 30 million units since they entered the market. However, there are some caveats, soXbox Series X/S fans should take these statistics with a grain of salt.
Ever sinceXbox entered the console market, it’s been competing with the Sony PlayStation, with the two systems often having similar specs and game libraries. While the competition has been steep at times, the Xbox Series X/S hasn’t sold as well as some of its predecessors.
Now, a new fiscal report from game publisherTake-Two Interactivehas shed some light on how the Xbox Series X/S systems are performing. Microsoft has stopped offering official statistics, so interested gamers haven’t had much to go on as of late. However, Take-Two indicates in its report that Sony and Microsoft have moved around 94 million consoles total. Sony is still reporting its numbers, and with roughly65 million PlayStation 5 units sold, that leaves the Xbox Series X/S systems with less than half of that, at about 30 million. This number may have increased somewhat, though, as the Take-Two report estimate is set in November 2024.
Xbox Lost The Console War, But…
Microsoft itself has said that Xbox has lost the console war of this generation, with Sony surpassing it in sales and Nintendo leaving both companies in its dust, with over 150 million Switch units sold. However, it’s not all bad news for Xbox. The company has put an increased focus on software, Xbox Game Pass, and the ability to play games across multiple systems, like PC. As such, while Xbox isn’t moving as much hardware during this console generation, the company is still managing to make itself a household name by continuing to offer services and games.Microsoft was also the top video game publisherin December 2024, as well.
What the future holds for Microsoft and Xbox is something that has made players curious. As the consoles are now approaching their fifth anniversary, many players are already looking ahead to the future and wondering what the next console generation will offer. Theories and rumors are already swirling about Xbox potentially revealing a new console in 2026 or beyond, but nothing concrete has been shared by the company. However, Xbox has shared that it’s more interested in working on a next-gen console rather than a mid-generation upgrade, like anequivalent to the PlayStation 5 Pro. Gamers have had mixed opinions on this, but with the current version of the Xbox Series X/S' sales numbers, it may be a good decision to move on to the next system.
