Eternal Remnant: The First Chapterdeveloper Arcfinder Studios recently discussed the inspiration behind the game’s team-up Limit Break attacks.Eternal Remnant: The First Chapterdraws influence from classic JRPGs likeFinal FantasyandLunar: Silver Star Storyto tell the tale of two siblings caught in a mystical adventure with major ties to their past. In classic JRPG fashion, they and their growing party of allies will need to use weapons, potions, and even a mysterious magic curse to fend off enemies on their journey.

Eternal Remnant: The First Chapterincludes another time-honored staple of turn-based JRPG combat: Limit Breaks. Inclassic JRPGs like theFinal Fantasyseries, Limit Breaks are special attacks that players can unleash after their characters take a certain amount of damage (often represented by a bar that fills with each enemy attack).Eternal Remnantadds a special twist to its Limit Breaks in that if two characters have their Limit bar filled, they can combine their attacks for added damage or special effects. Recently, Game Rant spoke with Arcfinder Studios about these Limit Breaks inEternal Remnant.

The combo Limit Break is an interesting twist on theclassic JRPG Limit Break system. The reason behind this system, according to Arcfinder, is to encompass the satisfaction that comes with “boosting” a character’s power, seen in other JRPGs likeOctopath Traveler. These Limit Breaks also add new depth toEternal Remnant’s combat, as players have the choice between using a character’s Limit Break as soon as the bar fills or waiting for another to gain theirs for extra damage and unique bonuses.

Eternal Remnat’s Limit Break Combos Add Strategic Depth

The player can also help othercharacters fill their Limit Break barsby donating energy during their turn, but only for a limited number of times before their own bar depletes. Characters can attack or perform supporting actions faster with a full Limit bar, making it all the easier to get another party member ready for a combo attack.

“I wanted to encompass the satisfaction that comes with “boosting” a character’s power (such as Limit Breaks, or using Boost Points inOctopath Traveler) as well as combining these characters for combo attacks. Those two elements operating in parallel would potentially introduce a lot of permutations, which could make the scope of development pretty tricky. As a solution, merging the two seemed to be an achievable design scheme.”

In the currentEternal RemnantSteam demo, siblings Vera and Arin cancombine their Limit Breaksfor a ranged attack that can quickly clear the battlefield, and the full game will likely add even more options for players to experiment with.Eternal Remnant: The First Chapteris still in development, but the Steam demo would be a great way to get a taste of this unique system.
