Physintis bringing Hideo Kojima back into the world of espionage thrillers. Although Kojima Productions isn’t able to create their ownMetal Gear Solidproject,Physintcould prove to be the next best thing, or even just as good. Regardless, the promise of another spy thriller headed by Kojima is exciting.

At the moment, there is virtually nothing known aboutPhysint, though. Kojima Productions has offered plenty of previews ofDeath Stranding 2and a short, bizarre teaser for the horror gameOD, but nothing substantial ofPhysinthas been revealed just yet. A first look intoPhysintmay potentially be years away, but when it comes to Easter eggs, the game is primed for a belovedMetal Gear Solidthrowback.

Physint is Bound to Feature Metal Gear Solid’s Cardboard Box

A Simple Item That Has Become a Gaming Staple

In theMetal Gear Solidfranchise, cardboard boxes are a trademark that help players hide from enemies. Cardboard boxes aren’t just practical stealth tools, they’re also tradition. The usage ofcardboard boxes has helped define theMetal Gear Solidseries, and if any Kojima Productions game is going to jump at the chance to pay tribute to the beloved franchise, it’sPhysint.

Hideo Kojima has stated thatPhysintwill feel like a blend between a video game and a movie.

At Summer Game Fest 2021, Hideo Kojima revealedDeath Stranding Director’s Cut, and with it, a fun nod to theMetal Gear Solidstealth mechanic. In the trailer, Sam attempts to get inside a large cardboard box to evade enemies. Additionally, these same boxes can be seen throughout the game.A product of Fragile Express, the boxes read, “Handled With Love”, which further referencesMetal Gear Solid. This is a direct throwback to Snake telling a rookie Raiden, “Don’t think of it as just another box. Treat it with love.”

IfDeath Strandingfeatures such an homage, then it only makes sense forPhysintto follow in its footsteps. Kojima himself has even said in past interviews thatthe inspiration behindPhysintwasMetal Gear Solid. The constant request from gamers for moreMetal Gear Solidstories pushed Kojima to make a fresh IP set within the same genre, so cardboard boxes would be a perfect little nod to those vocal fans who begged for such a game in the first place.

Last year,Fortnitefeatured its own tribute toMetal Gear Solid’s cardboard box.

Kojima Productions' Future Plans are Steeped in Deep Mystery

These three projects have all been quite secretive, but there may be fresh and exciting news waiting just around the corner. On March 9,Hideo Kojima will host a dedicated panel at SXSW, potentially revealing more about the upcoming projects. The panel is bound to be far moreDeath Stranding 2-centric than anything else, but there is still the possibility that Kojima shares more insight into whatODandPhysintwill be like.

Physintmay seem like one of gaming’s biggest mysteries at the moment, but Kojima Productions will eventually shed more light on the project in the years ahead. IfPhysintfeels like a spiritual successor toMetal Gear Solid, it will be an exciting time to be a fan of the latter once the first look at the former is finally revealed. Plus, it would mean that a cardboard box or two will be poised to find their way into a Kojima game yet again.
