How to Beat Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds

Since Chatacabra is the very first large monster you need to defeat to progress the story, its first variant features very basic stats and an attack moveset that’s easy to learn and dodge with enough practice. You won’t need to worry much about the capabilities of yourstarter weaponand instead focus on learning your own attacks and the fundamentals of weakening monsters.

Chatacabra’s attacks include the following:

All of Chatacabra’s attacks are physical with limited range, and there are no special attacks to worry about, even when the monster turns aggressive later in the fight. It’sweak to both Thunder and Ice elements, so any weapons and ammo augmented with those elements will do more damage. Meanwhile, it’sfully resistant to Dragon damage, so verify not to equip any weapons imbued with that element. It’s weakest to status ailments such as Poison, Paralysis, and Stun.

As you attack Chatacabra with your chosen weapon, it’s important to keep in mind where itsWeak Pointsare. All monsters in the game have different weak points, andChatacabra’s are located on its tongue and forelegs. If you focus your attacks on those spots, you will do even more damage and have a higher chance ofinflictingWounds, which are red-hued damage hotspots that you may easily see in Focus Mode (as seen above). If you fully destroy any open wounds, you have a better chance of obtaining certain items at the end of the battle.

Also, don’t forget to make use of the environment around you for even more advantage. Use your sling to bring down boulders or use swarms of gleaming Flashflies to temporarily blind the monster, giving you a chance to avoid detection while dealing damage.

All in all, Chatacabra is a very straightforward monster to fight, even against its tougher variant in the ‘A Futile Fight’ Optional Quest. While not the most challenging battle, it can still make for good practice, especially if you want to try out different weapons this way versus the Training Area.
