Summary

James Gunn and Peter Safran talked aboutDCUprojects in a recent interview. Gunn admitted that Jason Momoa’s casting as Lobo had always been part of the plan since DCU was announced.

TheDC Universe(DCU) was officially announced on July 05, 2025. Gunn and Safran were appointed as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios. The duo rebooted the now-defunctDC Extended Universe(DCEU) and moved on from the previous movies, includingMan of Steel(2013),Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom(2023),Batman v Superman(2016),Wonder Woman(2017),Suicide Squad(2016)andJustice League(2017). Henry Cavill was set to make anotherSupermanfilm, but Gunn and Safran decided to reboot it and introduce a younger superhero. The pair considered the upcomingSupermanmovie, starring David Corenswet, the true beginning of the DCU. However, one actor from the DCEU is now part of DCU and Gunn confirmed that it had always been part of his plans.

Momoa portrayed Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, in DCEU. He starred in two films,Aquaman(2018) andAquaman and the Lost Kingdom(2023). He is now part of Gunn and Safran’s rebooted DCU, but he is playing a new character -– the anti-hero Lobo. Gunn spoke about Momoa’s casting and shared a hilarious incident. It appeared that Momoa reached out to him for the role. “Jason was literally the first text I got after DC Studios was announced,” Gunn told The Nerds of Color. “And his text was, ‘Lobo baby’ with ten billion exclamation points. So essentially, I was like, ‘I think that’s a pretty good idea,’ so it was always part of the plan.” However, when asked when fans could see Momoa’s official look as Lobo in images, Gunn’s response suggested a long wait. Gunn said:

It’s probably going to be a while, to be frank.

Momoa making the first move to score the Lobo role wasn’t surprising. He has always been open about wanting to play the character. In a post onInstagram, Momoa confirmed his casting as Lobo and shared his fondness for the character by recounting a previous interview in which he talked about his interest in playing Lobo. “So Lobo was…I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, buthe was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,'” Momoa said in an interview. “I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah.“Gunn extended a warm welcome to Momoaby commenting on his post with “Welcome, my friend” with a motorcycle emoji. In another interview, while promotingAquamanin 2023, Momoa admitted that he auditioned forBatmanbut had always known the role wasn’t for him. When he received a callback, he was expecting to play Lobo,, but to his disappointment, he was offered theAquamanrole.

Momoa did great as DCEU’sAquaman. However, it was clear that his heart was in Lobo. In fact, he admitted that he couldn’t see himself playingAquamanuntil it was explained to him that the role was perfect for him. Momoa has always wanted to play Lobo and he successfully manifested it. Momoa will debut as Lobo in Milly Alcock’sSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Since fans are aware of Momoa’s fondness for his new role, there are high expectations from him playing Lobo. But there’s no doubt that he could pull it off effortlessly. He has the look and the build and is as suave as the intergalactic bounty hunter. Hopefully, Momoa will have his ownLobomovie or series because he was born to play the character.
