Jurassic World Rebirth Gives New Looks to Classic Dinosaurs

WhileJurassic World Rebirthwill feature new dinosaurs, several classic species from the past films will return with updated looks. Now, official prompt art forJurassic World Rebirthparty ballons (shared byJurassic Addict Final MixandChris Pugh) reveals new designs for the T-Rex, Spinosaurus, and Velociraptors. While the T-Rex and Spinosaurus designs are more or less similar to their previous looks, the Velociraptor is seemingly combining their appearances from previousJurassic ParkandJurassic Worldfilms.

In thefirstJurassic Parkmovie, the Velociraptors were a simple greyish color. When they returned forThe Lost World: Jurassic Park, they were given an orange and black-stripped design, similar to that of a Bengal tiger.Jurassic Park 3honored the then-recent discovery that many dinosaur species likely had feathers by giving the male Velociraptors banded quills on their head. Finally, the 3Jurassic Worldfilms gave each Velociraptor different color schemes, with the aptly named Blue (the Alpha of a group trained by Pratt’s Owen Grady) sporting a blue-skinned color design. As seen in theJurassic World Rebirthpromotional art, there are hints of each of these designs on the new Velociraptor.

Jurassic World Rebirthis primarily set on an island where the failed, mutated experimental dinosaurs were left behind. As such, this new Velociraptor could be the test design before theJurassic Parkscientists decided to try out each color scheme individually. This might provide an in-universe explanation for why the Velociraptors look different in each film.

Regardless, many fansweren’t impressed by theJurassic World Rebirthtrailer. One reason why some fans are frustrated with theJurassic Worldfranchise is because it relies on mutant dinosaurs. Each installment has featured mutated dinosaurs as its ‘primary antagonist,’ and while it may have been fun at first, the formula is tiresome to many. So, bringing back a classic dinosaur like the Velociraptor may also seem like returning to old tropes, but it’s also a sign that the filmmakers know the old dinosaurs work well enough on their own.

Jurassic World Rebirthis scheduled to be released in theaters on July 27, 2025.
