Summary

Keanu Reeveshas starred in multiple films, but there’s one role he has been wanting to reprise. According to the actor, he is “aching” to play the said character again.

Reeves' acting career began in the mid-1980s following minor roles in TV and movies. He became popular for the sci-fi comedyBill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure(1989) but turned into a full-fledged actor after his massive box-office hitSpeed(1994). He also led the blockbuster franchisesThe MatrixandJohn Wick, which cemented his Hollywood A-lister status. However, his favorite role isn’t from any of the said projects and he has been “aching” to portray it again.

Constantinedirector Francis Lawrence and Reeves reunited in a recent Happy Sad Confused podcast episode to mark the film’s 20th anniversary. During the interview, the duo gave an update about the anticipatedConstantinesequel, saying the script is already in the works and they are confident it will receive a green light once completed. While discussing Reeves' character — the cynical and jaded John Constantine — theSonic the Hedgehog 3staradmitted his longing to reprise the role. “I’m aching to play this guy,” Reeves shared. His revelation isn’t a surprise because Reeves has been open about his desire to make the sequel. In a previous interview onThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, when Reeves was promoting his bookThe Book of Elsewhere, he was asked for a character he wanted to play again. “I would love to play John Constantine again,” Reeves replied. He also added that he had been trying to persuade the producers for a sequel and implied that their answers were a “no.” But nine months after the said interview,Constantine 2was greenlit and Reeves thanked the late-night host when he returned on the show. “I have to say thank you. The power of your show reached so many. I got Colbert-ed in the best way and it worked,” Reeves said.

Lawrence also acknowledged Colbert’s contribution to makingConstantine 2happen and the movie’s “growing cult” despite the first film being released 20 years ago. “I think it’s the combination of that [Colbert appearance] and the sort of growing cult following of the original film over the years that have got people thinking like, ‘Okay, we can do this.’ We have finally gotten to the place where we now have the permission to go down that road,” Lawrence shared. Lawrence didn’t share the details about the plot but said Akiva Goldsman is penning the script and has been collaborating with Reeves for that. “I think we have some really, really great ideas that we’re super, super excited about. And I think we’re pretty close on having an object that is really workable,” Lawrence added. The director previously teasedthat they are “closer than ever to being able to do a sequel.”

The interest in theConstantinesequel has never faded despite the long wait for the next movie. Fans have been looking forward to it because there are numerous unfinished storylines. For instance, many want to know what happened to Gabriel after they lost their angelic power for betraying the divine purpose to conspire with Lucifer’s son, Mammon, to bring Hell to Earth. The half-breed archangel believes humans do not deserve God’s love and forgiveness so easily, so they turned the world into a battleground. However, God stripped them of their power as punishment by making them fully human. Fans also want to know what happens to Constantine’s deal with Lucifer since the first film ends with the latter resurrecting the former after being denied of his soul. Constantine earned redemption after sacrificing himself to stop evil. Lucifer resurrected him, hoping he would sin again, so his soul would end up in Hell. This is one of the things many fans want to be addressed in the sequel.
