On February 18,Magic: The Gatheringrevealed an in-depth look at theFinal Fantasycrossover set, and shared a glimpse at four Commander Decks that are themed around theFinal Fantasyfranchise’s top mainline games. Preorders for the upcomingMagic: The Gatheringcrossover set, which also includes theFinal FantasyStarter Kit and booster packs, are now available ahead of the crossover’s June 13 release.
First revealed in October 2024 witha few cards featuring characters like Emet-Selchand Lightning, the crossover betweenMagic: The GatheringandFinal Fantasyis part ofMTG’s “Universes Beyond” booster series. Universes Beyond has also consisted of crossovers from franchises such as Ubisoft’sAssassin’s Creedand Marvel’sSpider-Man. While other Universes Beyond boosters are not considered part ofMTG’s ruleset, theFinal Fantasyset has been confirmed as legal for standard play. Ergo,Final Fantasycan be considered the 105th overall expansion forMagic: The Gathering. TheFinal Fantasyset will include over 100 legendary creature cards, of which 55 of them will be borderless.
However,Magic: The GatheringandFinal Fantasyfans won’t have to wait much longer to get their hands on the new expansion.Preorders forMTG’sFinal Fantasycards, including Commander Decks, boosters, and collectible boxes, are now available on Amazon and at local card shops that sellMagic: The Gatheringproducts. The set will launch on June 13.
Magic: The Gathering Shares More Final Fantasy Crossover Details
The fourFinal FantasyCommander Decks feature characters from the franchise’s most popular mainline entries, includingFinal Fantasy 7’s Cloud Strife andFinal Fantasy 10’s Tidus. Two oftheFinal Fantasyseries' leading ladies,Terra Branford fromFinal Fantasy 6and Y’shtola Rhul fromFinal Fantasy 14, are also part of the Commander Deck roster. Along with contributions from various artists, cards also feature past artwork byFinal Fantasyseries artists Yoshitaka Amano and Tetsuya Nomura.
Double-faced cards that allow creatures to transform into more powerful cards when conditions are met are also part of theFinal Fantasyset. For example,Final Fantasy 14’s Emet-Selch can transform into Hades whenever the player has 14 or more cards in the graveyard. A new card type called Saga Creatures combines the Saga mechanic with a creature card that can cast powerful attacks after gaining a lore counter.ClassicFinal FantasySummons like Shivaare considered Saga Creatures, and can quickly turn the tide of a match.
AFinal FantasyStarter Kit containing two pre-made decks featuringFinal Fantasy 7’s Cloud and Sephiroth is also available fornewMagic: The Gatheringplayers to get into the game. It remains to be seen how manyFinal Fantasycharacters will be featured in the full set.
