TheMarvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)is one of history’s most successful media franchises, featuring over 30 films and numerous ongoing TV series. Since the release ofIron Manin 2008, many projects have been announced to fans, but later faced cancellation during pre-production for various reasons.
From behind-the-scenes drama to budgetary issues, many of these projects were highly anticipated, only to be taken away from fans and often never mentioned again. While the creators of the MCU likely had their reasons for canceling these projects, it doesn’t make it any easier for the fans.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
Replaced By Avengers: Doomsday
Avengers: The Kang Dynastywas set to be the fifth Avengers movie, scheduled for release in mid-2026. However, with the controversy surrounding Johnathan Majors, who was set to reprise the role of Kang, the movie was officially canceled and replaced withAvengers: Doomsday.
Canceling this movie was a significant setback for the MCU, as the original intention was forKang to be the main antagonist of Phase 6. AlthoughAvengers: Doomsdaywill surely be great, it’s a shame that projects likeLokiandAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which were building up to Kang’s proper arrival, will have no payoff.
Damage Control
A Comedy Series Focusing On The Damage Control Agency
Damage Controlwas set to be the MCU’s first proper comedy series, with an initial release date in 2016. The story was set to follow Damage Control workers while they go about their daily tasks of cleaning up after our favorite heroes. The show would have likely shown viewers the aftermath of key battles in the MCU, like the battle of New York, Sokovia, and the Triskellion.
Considering the comedic aspect, the show would likely have offered a light-hearted perspective on these key battles. Unfortunately, it was confirmed as canceled in 2019 during a Comic-Con panel, with the only explanation given being,“It didn’t work out.“Since then, Damage Control has appeared in the MCU in bothSpider-Man: HomecomingandFar From Home,although in a more serious tone.
Ghost Rider
A Show Set To Focus On Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes
Although no one can seem to confirm whetherAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a part of the MCU canon, Ghost Rider, who debuted in Season 4 of the series, was originally intended to have his own television series within the MCU. In the series,Gabriel Luna would reprise his role as Robbie Reyes and Ghost Rider.
The show was scheduled for release in 2020, with Ingrid Escajeda confirmed as the showrunner and Paul Zybszewski and Jeph Loeb as producers. While the specific storyline remains unclear, Hulu executives stated that it would be new and independent of theAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.storyline. Unfortunately, the show was officially canceled in 2019 due to “creative differences.”
James Gunn Projects
James Gunn Was Working On Multiple Projects Before He Left Marvel
James Gunn,the creator of the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxymovies, has disclosed that several projects were under development before he departed from Marvel to join DC. Although these projects were never given release dates, Gunn confirmed that some progress had been made, but the extent of that progress is unknown.
Three major projects were canceled when Gunn left Marvel. These included a solo film featuring Drax and Mantis, which might have been similar toAnt-Man and the Wasp. Additionally, there was a planned origin story for Rocket and Groot that would explore how they first met, as well as a Disney+ series based on the Ravager with Gamora as the lead. Interestingly, there’s been confirmation regarding the state of the Star Lord project.
Marvel’s Most Wanted
An Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Spinoff
Marvel’s Most Wantedwas set to feature two prominent characters fromAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter. The series would have followed the two former S.H.I.E.L.D. agents as they try to uncover the conspiracy that has put their lives in danger.
The series had the backing of writer Paul Zbyszewski and executive producer Jeffrey Bell, and was even rumored to have had a full script ready to go. Ultimately, despite being said to start filming in mid-2016, the show was canceled in May of the same year.
Captain Britain
A Captain Britain & Black Knight Project
In mid-2017, Kevin Feige confirmed that a Captain Britain movie had been discussed, and multiple actors had expressed interest in the lead role of Brian Braddock / Captain Britain. Actors like Simon Pegg and Henry Cavill expressed interest in the role, but no official castings were ever made.
In 2018, it was reported that Marvel Studios began holding auditions for a project titled “Captain Britain and the Black Knight” at Pinewood Studios in the UK. However, by 2021, all discussions about the project had ended, and it was presumed canceled. In early 2025, new rumors emerged suggesting that a Captain Britain movie starring Henry Cavill may be in development, but this remains unconfirmed.
Inhumans Movie
The Movie That Was Replaced By The TV Series
TheInhumansmovie began development in 2011, with an official announcement from Marvel moving forward with the project in 2014 and setting a release date for July 31, 2025. Fans heard little about the project until 2016, when Disney removed the title from its production schedule, leaving many fans confused.
In a surprising turn of events, it was announced that an Inhumans series would be released instead of a movie. The show premiered in 2017, but it ultimately backfired on Marvel, as theInhumansseries became one of their worst-received projects to date. Black Bolt, King of the Inhumans, would make his MCU film debut inDoctor Strange: Multiverse of Madnessin 2022.
Okoye and the Midnight Angels
A Series Set To Release Following ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’
In 2021, it was reported that a Disney+ series titledOkoye and the Midnight Angelswould be released afterBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever.The series intended to explore Okoye’s origins and the history of Wakanda. At the start of 2025, it was confirmed that the project had been officially canceled. However, the storyline was revealed.
The story would have centered around Okoeye as she led the Midnight Angels, with flashback scenes exploring her origins. In the show, the Midnight Angels would likely be tasked with keeping Wakanda safe or searching the globe for stolen Vibranium. Despite its cancelation, rumors are suggesting a new show led by Danai Gurira’s Okoeye might be in the works.
Silver Surfer
A Solo Silver Surfer Project Was In The Works
After Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, characters such as the X-Men and Fantastic Four became available for use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Some fans were disgruntled, as other non-MCU projects were canceled. However, this acquisition ultimately allowed these characters to join the MCU.
In 2019, following the acquisition, a Silver Surfer project was confirmed to be in development. Limited story details were available at the time, but writer Adam McKay shared that he wanted to use the project to highlight environmental issues. The project was canceled before 2021, but Silver Surfer is expected to debut in the MCU inThe Fantastic Four: First Stepsin 2025.
The Eternals (TV Series)
Meant To Be Released Before The Movie
The EternalsTV series had been in development since 2015, and it was officially confirmed in 2017. Although not much is known about the story, it was reportedly going to show the Eternals as teenagers, an idea that didn’t go down well with fans at the time.
The series was ultimately canceled in 2018, paving the way for the poorly received movie released in 2021. Interestingly, many fans have expressed that they would have preferred to see the Eternals in a series format, as the increased runtime would allow for more in-depth character development.
