Summary

Over the years,Minecraft’s growing assortment of biomes has added incredible diversity to its endless, procedurally generated world. With each new area introduced, Mojang’s sandbox also benefits from new creatures, materials, and items for its creative players to experiment with. As a result of this steady pace of improvement,Minecraftplayers are constantly dreaming up ideas for future additions.

One of the most recent additions occurred in 2023 when theCherry Grove biome debuted inMinecraft. This area consists of grassy fields populated with vibrant pink cherry trees. These trees, in turn, generate pink wood that players can use in their constructions. Last year,Minecraftadded the pale garden, an extremely rare biome with gray, desaturated trees and foliage. Another striking feature of the Pale Garden is the occurrence of Creaking, a hostile mob with a frightening appearance.

WhileMinecrafthas added new forests to the game, Redditor AnouuSi suggested that it’s only fitting for a sandbox game to feature a sand dune biome. Using some images of two real-life sand dunes, they argue that it could contrast with the “new grassy desert.” The poster referred to theMinecraftsnapshot released on February 5, which added short and tall dry grass. Those blocks appear only in the Desert and Badlands, giving both biomes a new look. Players can grow short and tall dry grass with bone meal for use in the composter or as fuel for smelting.

Minecraft Players Debate Adding Sand Dunes to the Game

AnouuSi’s idea gathered positive reactions and reservations about how the biome could work in the game. A concern among Minecraft fans was how to make the dune biome something other than “just an empty space,” encouraging players to explore it rather than avoid it. Some fans offered ideas to approach this issue, such as adding a system of caves and underground structures. A second suggested that the biome could have villages and structures buried in the sand, something with the potential to breathe new life intoMinecraft’s archaeology features.

While the idea of the sand dune biome has attracted the attention of the community, it’s only the latest in a long tradition of Minecraft players brainstorming new terrain features. Previously, a player showed what it would be likeifMinecrafthad a sky island biome, giving the game aTears of the Kingdom-esque feel. Another creative idea suggested adding a “routes biome,” increasing connectivity between areas of the map.
