Summary
As a fan of the WB/CW dramaSmallville, I was eager to check outWednesday, theNetflixseries focused ona young Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) leavingthe Addams Family mansionbehind and becoming a student Nevermore Academy. TheSmallvilleshowrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are also the creators and showrunners onWednesday, and there are some fascinating similarities between the two popular shows.
While fans wait for an officialWednesdayseason 2 release date, I’m thinking about whetherWednesdaycould have a Halloween episodeand what kind of trouble the Goth character is going to get into this time. I’m also wonderingifWednesdayseason 2 could be inspired bySmallvillein one specific way.
How Could Wednesday Season 2 Be Inspired By Smallville’s Clark Kent And Lex Luthor Friendship?
I think thatClark Kent (Tom Welling) and Lex Luthor’s (Michael Rosenbaum)Smallvillefriendship is one of the best parts of the series. Bythe end ofSmallvilleseason 1,Clark has seen a new side of Lex, and their connection begins. I also think thatWednesdayseason 2 should explore a similar relationship. I thinkWednesday should befriend a villain in the second season, which could mean she becomes friends with the person stalking her.
Whilethe stalker could be someone Wednesday knows, whether part of Wednesday’s Nevermore social circle or even a member of the Addams Family, it could also be a total stranger who she has never even heard of. In that case, after solving the mystery,Wednesday and her stalker could find some common ground. Considering how dark Wednesday is, I don’t think that she would necessarily blame someone for spying on her. She might understand why they did it, and she might respect this character for being so bold. At the very least, this would add an interesting layer to the show andWednesdayseason 3, if it happens, could explore this new dynamic between these two characters.
OnSmallville,Clark stops Lex from dying when he gets into a car accident and almost drowns, which is an inciting incident for their friendship. While Lex always thinks that Clark is hiding something, the two are still good friends throughout the WB/CW drama. Since they have such a compelling relationship, I would love to see something similar inWednesdayseason 2. Although Clark is sweeter and more innocent than Wednesday, andtheWednesdayseason 2 sneak peek photosuggests a dark tone, I still want to see Wednesday have a complex bond with someone else.
I also think there’s a perfect opportunity forWednesday’s friendship with Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) to mirror Clark and Lex’s. Lex Luthor and Tyler have a lot in common. While Lex has his evil moments and comes from a terrible family, he tries to be a good person. Similarly, althoughTyler is the Hyde Monster, he also has some good inside of him. I like that Clark and Lex help each other throughoutSmallville, but there is always the chance that Lex will betray Clark since he’s got an evil side. This keeps things interesting. I think that while Wednesday trusts Tyler on some level, she also knows that he’s a wild card, and that should be explored more inWednesdayseason 2.
What Did The Showrunners Say About Working On Smallville And Wednesday?
In a 2022 interview withThe Hollywood Reporter,Miles Millar and Al Gough talked about working onWednesdayandSmallville. Since both TV series are about younger versions of these famous characters, they have a lot in common. It’s fascinating to seehow Clark Kent becomes the Man of Steeland equally compelling to watch an adolescent Wednesday Addams attend an atmospheric boarding school. Millar said:
“how do you add emotional complexity to these iconic characters? Wednesday seems like a one-note character, and I’ve always found Clark Kent a one-note character. He’s just sort of a goody, goody, and Wednesday’s sort of just a snarky kid. So how do you, as a writer, take characters like those — kind of like extremes by the way — and then make them feel human?”
Gough added thatbothSmallvilleandWednesdayhave a “mix of tones.“He said:
“you could be an action-adventure show inSmallville, you can be a family drama, you could be a teen romance, you could be a horror show sometimes or a mystery. So, I think it was really kind of evolving that sort of mix of tones in one show that I think we then took toWednesday.”
