Despite this, many in the community have remained hopeful about the title as a whole, with theFablereboot promising to include both physical and magical combat, ample exploration, crafting, and much more. Unfortunately, players will have to wait quite a bit longer to try it out for themselves.

Microsoft has officially delayedFableout of its previously planned 2025 release window, pushing the game back to 2026. Craig Duncan, the current head of Xbox Game Studios, gave more details during a new episode of the Xbox Podcast, explaining that the upcoming fantasy title is “worth the wait” while showing off brand-new gameplay footage. “I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team,” Duncan said, highlighting the studio’s previous work onForza Horizonand complimenting the team’s version ofFable’s world of Albion. Aside from its planned release for Xbox Series X/S and PC, previous rumors indicate thatFablewill also be released for PlayStation 5on day one, and it’s unclear whether this extra time taken will make this more of a concrete possibility. “I want the community to understand that we do these things for the best of the games and the teams, and ultimately that results in the best game for the community,” Duncan concluded.

Fable Will Now Be Released Sometime in 2026

The new pre-alpha in-game footage shown during the stream highlighted the game’s city setting, while also providing a fresh look at combat and the title’s more fantastical forest scenery. Weapons appearing in the footage include swords, a hammer, and a fire-based magical attack, with Playground Games seeming to offer plenty of unique playstyles for different users. Past games in the franchise have focused heavily on choice-driven gameplay, and while this hasn’t been stressed in any footage seen so far, players hope thatFablewill offer more complex and morally ambiguous decisionsfor players to make.

In July 2024, it was confirmed thatthree studios were hard at work onFable, with Playground Games building an entirely new division to work on the reboot. Eidos Montreal is also providing support, and fans now have no choice but to hope that the game finally sees the light of day in 2026. After all, the last mainlineFablegame is almost 15 years old, withFable 3having been released way back in October 2010.
