One Pieceis such a huge and popular action shōnen franchise that there is inevitably a lot of supplemental material which the series' creator, Eiichiro Oda, did not work on, like filler episodes of the anime, feature films and even video games. Naturally, this has led to the creation of many non-canon characters, locations and Devil Fruits that fans have grown to love (or hate).
But what’s especially fascinating aboutOne Pieceis that this series has gone on for so long thatOda has managed to come up with somecanonical Devil Fruitsthat work almost exactly like the non-canon ones that were specifically made for the anime, the movies or the video games. This is an intriguing phenomenon that has occurred a few times, and the following six examples are the most interesting ones so far.
6Nemu Nemu no Mi (Noko) / Memo Memo no Mi (Charlotte Pudding)
Devil Fruits That Can Manipulate Their Target’s Memories
The 2003 video gameOne Piece: Ocean’s Dream!introduced a character known as Noko, a seahorse with the bizarre ability to put people to sleep, trap them inside a dream world and manipulate and steal their memories. He can do all of this thanks to his Devil Fruit, theNemu Nemu no Miwhich,curiously enough, wasn’t even mentioned in the anime adaptation of this non-canon arc.
Fourteen years later, during the Whole Cake Island Arc, Eiichiro Oda introduced Charlotte Pudding, Big Mom’s daughter and Sanji’s temporary fiancé, who can also read people’s memories and erase them by turning them into filmstrips, all thanks to her own Devil Fruit, theMemo Memo no Mi. While both powers are quite similar, the canonical one stands out due to its much more creative design and utility.
5Ame Ame No Mi (Gasparde) / Pero Pero No Mi (Charlotte Perospero)
Gasparde is the main antagonist of the fourthOne Piecefilm,Dead Adventure. He’s a pirate who used to be a marine and who now terrorizes the seas with the bizarre powers of theAme Ame no Mi, a Logia Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control and turn his body into a candy-like substance. Despite the goofy nature of this ability, Gasparde proved to be quite a strong and deadly villain that took Monkey D. Luffy a lot of effort to defeat.
Oda eventually introduced a canonical Devil Fruit that works quite similarly to Gasparde’s Ame Ame no Mi: thePero Pero no Mi, which was eaten by Big Mom’s second-in-command, Charlotte Perospero. The main difference between the two is that the Pero Pero no Mi is a Paramecia instead of a Logia,meaning that its user can’t turn his body into candy, he can only create and control it. Nevertheless, he did use his powers to replace the arm he lost with a candy substitute.
4Atsu Atsu No Mi (Don Accino) / Netsu Netsu No Mi (Charlotte Oven)
Devil Fruits That Can Heat Up The Bodies Of Their Users
Fire-based Devil Fruits come in many different shapes and forms, with one of the most noteworthy non-canon ones being theAtsu Atsu no Mi. It was eaten by the main antagonist of the Ice Hunter filler arc, Don Accino, and it allows him to raise the temperature of his own body to an extreme extent, not to mention that he can also create balls of heat with his hand that he can use as a deadly projectile.
In canon, Charlotte Oven ate a Devil Fruit named theNetsu Netsu no Mi, which works extremely similar to Accino’s Atsu Atsu no Mi. With it, Oven can not only heat up his body to even higher temperatures, but he can also transfer said heat to a weapon or channel it through seawater, which allows him to hit enemies underwater. Because of these key differences, the Netsu Netsu no Mi is one of the most dangerous Devil Fruits in the entire series.
3Mosa Mosa No Mi (Binz) / Mori Mori No Mi (Aramaki)
Devil Fruits That Can Manipulate Plant Life
Anime characters with the unique ability to manipulate plants, trees and flowers are always some of the most fascinating ones in their respective series. Needless to say,One Piecehas featured two different fighters with plant-based Devil Fruits, with the first one being Binz, one of Z’s officers in the twelfth movieOne Piece Film: Z. With the powers of hisMosa Mosa no Mi, he can accelerate the growth of plants around him and control them in order to attack his enemies, which allows him to fight in a way that is not too different from Usopp’s mastery of the Pop Greens.
As impressive as his Devil Fruit is, at the end of the day, Binz still needs existing plants to engage in combat.Its canonical counterpart, Admiral Ryokugyu’s Mori Mori no Miis much more powerful and practical, mainly due to the fact that it’s a Logia Devil Fruit. So, not only can Aramaki change into a giant tree monster, but he can also control a much larger range of plant life across the battlefield.
2Batto Batto No Mi, Model: Vampire (Patrick Redfield) / Batto Batto No Mi (Stussy)
Devil Fruits That Allow Their Users To Transform Into Vampire Bats
While it’s actually quite rare for non-canon Zoan Devil Fruits to get a canonical counterpart, it has happened once.The main villain of the 2013 video gameUnlimited World Red, Patrick Redfield, has eaten theBatto Batto No Mi, Model: Vampire, a Mythical Zoan that allows him to turn into a vampire and drain his victim’s lifeforce. Although this potent Devil Fruit also gives Patrick all the traditional vampire weaknesses, like sunlight or garlic.
Oda recently introduced a similar Zoan-type Devil Fruit during the Egghead Arc,as it was revealed that Stussy had eaten the simply named Batto Batto No Mi. While the canonical version also allows its user to grow bat wings and drain her target’s blood, it’s based on a real-life vampire bat instead of the mythological vampire and, thus, Stussy is not seemingly affected by sunlight when she’s in her hybrid form.

Devil Fruits That Allow Can Change The Size Of Different Objects
Sometimes, two Devil Fruits share the same power, but they have completely different applications, and the two prominent size-changing Devil Fruits in the franchise are the perfect example of this phenomenon. On one hand, there’s theMoa Moa no Mi, which was eaten by Byrnndi World, the main antagonist of the TV special3D2Y: Overcome Ace’s Death! Luffy’s Vow to his Friends. He uses it to increase the size and speed of different weapons and objects, like scythes and cannonballs, not to mention that he can even enlarge himself.
On the other hand, however, there’s the canonicalIku Iku No Mi, which was eaten by Biblo,the giant owl and chief librarian of Elbaf’s Owl Library. With his Devil Fruit, Biblo can enlarge human-made books, so giants can easily read them. This is a much more harmless and peaceful use of such an impressive ability, which goes to show how versatile Devil Fruits can truly be.
