Quick Links
Eiichiro Oda’sOne Piecehas long been praised for its rich world-building, particularly in how it explores different races that inhabit the Grand Line and beyond. From humans and giants to fish-men and minks, the series has introduced numerous species, each with its own unique history and culture.
However,One PieceChapter 1139 brought even more complexity to the lorewhen Scopper Gaban mentioned several hybrid races, some known and others completely new.
Buccaneers: The Giants in Human Form
Buccaneers are among the most intriguing of the known hybrid races. Firstrevealed through Bartholomew Kuma’s backstory, Buccaneers are humans who carry the blood of giants, granting them incredible size and strength. According to Scopper Gaban, Buccaneers are hybrids of multiple races, and there is a rumor they carry the blood of giants. However, they do not appear to be a simple hybrid of humans and giants, as Colon, who is half-human and half-giant, is not considered a Buccaneer. Unlike giants, Buccaneers age at a rate closer to humans, as evidenced by Kuma’s growth compared to normal giants.
What Makes Buccaneers Special?
Beyond their immense physique, Vegapunk hinted that there is something else that makes Buccaneers unique. This unknown trait may be linked to Kuma’s ability to act after his total shutdown switch was activated, defying expectations.
Persecution and Extinction
Buccaneers have been heavilypersecuted by the World Government due to an alleged great crimethey committed in the past. If discovered, they and their families are either enslaved by the Celestial Dragons or executed, leading them to near extinction alongside the Lunarians and the Three-Eye Tribe.
Buccaneers revere the Sun God Nika, a figure of legend who is said to bring joy and freedom to the world. This belief has been passed down for generations and played a significant role in Kuma’s backstory.
Longlimb Hybrids: The Fusion of Longarm, Longleg, and Snakeneck Tribes
Longlimbs and Longlimbnecks
Longlimb hybrids are the result of interbreeding between members of the Longarm, Longleg, and Snakeneck tribes. These individuals inherit the distinctive features of their parent races, such as elongated limbs and extended necks.
Notable Appearances in One Piece
The only known example of a Longlimb hybrid appeared in Big Mom’s prisoner book, though Scopper Gaban’s statementin Chapter 1139 implies that more of these individuals exist in the world. In the anime, a captured Longlimb was depicted as a man, though he lacked the double-jointed arms characteristic of the Longarm Tribe. In the manga, only a speech bubble of it crying for help was shown, making it unclear what their full appearance entails.
There are also cases where a member of one of these tribes procreates with a human, resulting in a half-human and half-longleg/longarm hybrid.Notable examples are in the Big Mom Pirates. For example, Charlotte Smoothie, Citron and Cinnamon are half-human and half longlegs, while Charlotte Marbie, Mobile and Myukuru are half-human and half longarm.
Wotans: The Hybrid of Giants and Fish-Men
A well-established hybrid race inOne Piece, Wotans are born from unions between giants and fish-men. They retain the physical strengths of both races, possessing significant size, strength, and aquatic capabilities. Big Pan was the first Wotan introduced in the series (as a member of the Foxy Pirates whoappeared during the Long Ring Long Land Arc). He demonstrated incredible size and durability, characteristics of both his fish-man and giant heritage.
While Wotans are smaller than full-blooded giants, they are still considerably larger than most fish-men and humans. Their combination of land and sea adaptability makes them a formidable race. Theirfish-man heritage grants them enhanced underwater abilities, including increased strength and agility.
Dosundadas: A New Mystery in One Piece Lore
What Are the Dosundadas?
Chapter 1139 introduced the Dosundadas, a race never before mentioned in One Piece. Their name appears to be a fusion of “Dosun” (a Japanese onomatopoeia for a hammer strike) and “Dada,” reminiscent of the “Tatta” in Tontatta, the diminutive dwarf race from Dressrosa.
Given these linguistic clues, a prevailing theory suggests that Dosundadas are hybrids between Giants and Tontattas. This would make them a unique race of blacksmithing dwarves, possibly linked tothe legendary craftsmen referenced by the Sea Kingsat the end of the Fish-Man Island arc—beings capable of repairing the ancient ship Noah.
Possible Traits of the Dosundadas
As of now, the Dosundadas remain a mystery, but given how they were introduced, there’s no doubt that they will play an important role in the final saga.
Rules of Hybridization in One Piece World
Unlike in the real world, where interspecies reproduction is often biologically impossible, One Piece has demonstrated that nearly all races can interbreed.
These hybridization rules suggest that the One Piece world is remarkably flexible in its racial diversity— its like Gaban said, there are a lot of very “open-minded” people in theOne Pieceworld.
