Since the reveal of Gear 5 and the true nature of Luffy’s Devil Fruit, the protagonist ofOne Piecehas gone through a fair amount of scrutiny from the community. Mainly, most fans were curious about the relationship between Luffy and the legendary figures ofOne Piecehistory, like Nika or Joy Boy. For many fans, whether or not Luffy was a descendent of Nika, a reincarnation of the Sun God, or just someone who inherited their will from the Devil Fruit was hard to tell.
However, due to the similarities between the big reveals of other anime, namelyNaruto, fans have been particularly curious about whether or not Luffy is actually a reincarnation of the Sun God Nika. Although whether this is true or not wouldn’t change much in the overall direction of the story, many fans feel that Luffy being a reincarnation of Nika would cheapen his journey throughoutOne Piece’sGrand Line, attributing his success to the Sun God and not his own hard work. Luckily, for those fans, reincarnation doesn’t seem to be a topic thatOne Piecereally tackles, making it fairly unlikely to be the case with Luffy.
Is Luffy The Reincarnation of The Sun God Nika In One Piece?
Luffy Seems To Be Himself Even After Unlocking Gear 5
When it comes to Luffy’s lineage inOne Piece, while he does come from a fairly powerful line of characters, beyond that, little is known about the ancestors of Luffy. Due to this, as of now, there is no physical relation between Luffy, the former Nika Fruit user, Joy Boy, and Nika. However, while they aren’t physically related, these three characters are connected through an entirely different concept of inherited will.
Just like the legendary Sun God Nika from the fables of Elbaf, he too fought with an elastic and stretchy body.
Inherited will exist in multiple forms in theOne Pieceuniverse, both physically and metaphorically. Metaphorically, younger characters represent the ideals of older characters, carrying on their philosophies and spirit into later generations. At the same time, throughthe strange nature of Zoan Devil Fruits, the physical will of a character from the past can be present in later generations, theoretically being stored within this special kind of fruit.
Luffy Has Inherited The Will Of Nika And Isn’t A Reincarnation
The Devil Fruit Doesn’t Make Luffy A Reincarnation It Makes Him A Vessel For Inherited Will
Rather than being a physical ancestor or reincarnation of Joy Boy or Nika inOne Piece, it’s much more likely that Luffy’s connection to the Sun God is purely through the concept of inherited will. Firstly, by valuing the freedom and joy of others above all else, Luffy metaphorically brings the values of Nika to a generation that tried to eraseOne Piece’sSun God. Additionally, by eating the Sun God Nika Fruit, being a Zoan Devil Fruit, Luffy may have also physically inherited some of the will and properties of the Sun God that manifest when he uses Gear 5.
A strong example of how Luffy is not the reincarnation of Nika inOne Piececomes from looking at otherawakened Zoan Devil Fruit users. For example, one could say that Rob Lucci, through his awakened Devil Fruit, has physically inherited the properties of a leopard. At the same time, the character also possesses many qualities that one would associate with a leopard metaphorically, being a cold and ruthless killer. However, despite this, it would be silly to suggest that Rob Lucci is the reincarnation of a leopard.
There Are Som Details That Suggest Luffy May Be Special In Some Way
The Nika Fruit Specifically Chose Luffy Over Anyone Else
Still, there are details inOne Piecethat show that Luffy is more special than your average Devil Fruit user. Mainly, many fans believe thatthe Nika Fruit inOne Piecechose Luffy to be its user, rather than his discovering the fruit as a mere coincidence. If this was the case, this could potentially mean that Luffy had some sort of special lineage, like being the reincarnation of Nika, that the Devil Fruit was looking for, though there could be other reasons for this as well.
It was said he would bring laughter to their lips and free them from their suffering. - Who’s-Who
In the end, although some smaller theories state otherwise, Luffy is not a reincarnation ofthe Sun God Nika inOne Piece. Possessing the Nika Devil Fruit is simply a case of inherited will and doesn’t mean that Luffy is the “Nika” of the new generation. Instead, despite symbolically representing Nika, like most other Zoan Fruit users symbolically representing their abilities, Luffy is simply himself, a childish and goofy pirate fighting to make a difference in the world ofOne Piece.
