Summary

If there’s one thing consistent inOne Piece, it’s how Luffy has continuously pushed the boundaries of his abilities, with Gear 4 serving as one of his most powerful transformations (second only to Gear 5). Developed during his training on Rusukaina, Gear 4 is a formidable technique that combines the elasticity of his Gomu Gomu no Mi with the immense power of Armament Haki.

Luffy first used it inhis battle against Doflamingo, and Gear 4 dramatically enhanced Luffy’s strength, speed, and defense, making him capable of facing some of the strongest adversaries in the series. Unlike Gear 5 though, Gear 4 comes with a bunch of different forms tailored to different combat situations (and maybe how Luffy is feeling for that particular fight). Which means that each version of Gear 4 has its own distinct advantages and limitations, making them key to Luffy’s evolving fighting style throughoutOne Piece.

One Piece: Understanding How Luffy Achieves Gear 4

The Mechanics Behind Gear 4

Gear 4 is activated when Luffy inflates his muscles by blowing air into his body, similar to Gear 3, but distributing it differently to enhance his upper body. His limbs and torso expand significantly, andhis entire body is coated with Armament Haki, giving it a black, tattoo-like appearance. This compression of muscle fibers grants Luffy explosive power and increased durability, allowing him to withstand devastating attacks. However, Gear 4 has a strict time limit, and once exhausted, Luffy experiences severe fatigue and temporarily loses the ability to use Haki.

Unlike previous transformations, Gear 4 relies on compression rather than pure stretching. Luffy’s attacks become faster and more powerful due to the spring-like effect of compressed limbs. However, this compression also shortens the reach of his attacks, forcing him to get closer to his opponents. While this enhances his overall combat ability, it creates vulnerabilities against foeswith long-range techniques or superior Haki.

Boundman: The Powerhouse

Boundman was the first variation of Gear 4 introduced. In this form, Luffy becomes significantly larger, with exaggerated proportions that make him appear balloon-like. His continuous bouncing movement prevents him from staying still on the ground, hence the name.

Characteristics of Boundman:

Tankman: The Ultimate Defense

Tankman is a variation of Gear 4 that Luffy used duringhis fight against Charlotte Cracker. This form appears when Luffy consumes an excessive amount of food, drastically inflating his body beyond normal Boundman proportions.

Characteristics of Tankman:

Snakeman: The Speed Demon

Snakeman was unveiled during Luffy’s battle against Katakuri, emphasizing speed and relentless offense over durability.

Drawbacks and Limitations

While Gear 4 grants immense power, it is not without its drawbacks. The technique consumes an enormous amount of stamina, and once the time limit is reached, Luffy enters a vulnerable state where he cannot use Haki for ten minutes. Prolonged use can also render him unconscious, as seen in his battle against Kaido. Additionally, enemies with exceptional Haki or sheer physical strength can bypass Gear 4’s defenses, making it ineffective in some situations.

Evolution of Gear 4

Luffy has progressively improved Gear 4, minimizing its weaknesses over time. During his training in Wano, he gained better control over his Haki, allowing him to use Gear 4 more efficiently. Byadvancing his Armament Haki techniques, he has developed new applications of his transformations, such as the ability to enter Gear 4 instantly without inflating his body. Additionally, Luffy has demonstrated partial transformations, using the principles of Gear 4 in isolated areas of his body for more controlled attacks, referred to as “Mini Gear 4.”

Gear 4 remains one of Luffy’s most defining power-ups, allowing him to overcome formidable foes like Doflamingo, Katakuri, and even Yonko commanders. Each variation—Boundman, Tankman, and Snakeman—have distinct combat personalities, demonstrating the versatility of Luffy’s fighting style. While Gear 4 has its weaknesses, andmaybe not as hyped as Gear 5.it is still a very creative and fun transformation.
