After the War of the Best ofOne Piece’sMarineford Arc, where Garp witnessed the death of his grandson’s son, Ace, Garp was distraught with the state of the Marines. However, with the increased number of pirate attacks, Garp returned to be stationed atOne Piece’sEast Bluewhere he would defend Foosha Village and reunite with Dadan, a Mountain Bandit and pivotal figure in raising both Luffy and Ace. Although Dadan blamed Garp for Ace’s death here, Makino reveals here that Garp is suffering greatly from the loss of his grandson.

At the same time, it is revealed that both Garp and his close ally and formerFleet Admiral ofOne Piece, Sengoku, attempted to step down from their positions in the Navy. Although Garp didn’t do much for Punk Hazard through Wano, from here, Garp’s next major arc comes atthe start ofOne Piece’sFinal Saga. Weeks after assisting the Neptune Family, Garp hears word that Koby, his closest mentor, has been kidnapped by Blackbeard and taken to the pirate island Hachinosu. Immediately, Garp plans a rescue mission to sail to the island and take back Koby, recruiting Koby’s close ally, Helmeppo, other members of SWORD, and Tashigi in order to save Koby.
Upon reaching the island, Garp reveals that he believes Koby is the future of the Marines, hinting about how important he is toOne Piece, before launching one of the most powerful attacks the series has seen, the Galaxy Impact. After this,Garp confronted his former student, Kuzan, who had joined the Blackbeard Pirates and demanded Koby’s freedom. However, of course, Kuzan seems like a changed person and seems more keen to fight Garp instead of complying.

Although things seemed like they were going well for the Marines at first, as the others escaped, including Koby, Garp was pierced through the chest by a massive ice spike from Kuzan. However, Garp encourages those who left that they are the future of the Marines, laughing despite his unfortunate situation.

From here, it is revealed that Garp survived his encounter and is currently a prisoner of theBlackbeard Pirates duringOne Piece’sElbaf Arc. Although Garp’s next steps in the story are unknown, many fans are worried that Luffy’s grandfather may not survive for much longer. However, fans may have to wait for the serious events ofOne Piece’sElbaf Arc to settle down before seeing Garp’s side of the story once again.
