Capcom dropped a new trailer forOnimusha: Way Of the Sword, and it carries plenty of new details about the gameplay experience and the legacy behind its new protagonist, Musashi Miyamoto. There’s been a leap between mainlineOnimushagames, but now may be a better time forOnimusha: Way of the Swordthan ever, since Capcom seems like it’s hitting a strong stride in its release schedule.

TheOnimushagames date back to 2001 withOnimusha: Warlords, and although there hasn’t been much recent hype for the series ahead of Capcom’s newest announcements, it’s among thelist of the best-selling Capcom games. The newOnimushaproject appears to be somewhat of a soft reboot, taking its focus away from Samanosuke Akechi and allowing new players and old fans to enter on a clean slate.

A new trailer forOnimusha: Way of the Swordpremiered during theFebruary 12 PlayStation State of Play event, mixing gameplay and cutscenes to give gamers a better idea of what’s in store for them when it drops in 2026. The trailer shows a group of enemies the player is likely to be taking on over the course of the game before showing off Musashi Miyamoto, who seems to be eager for a fight. Miyamoto appears to be based on the legendary Japanese swordsman of the same name from the Edo period, with gameplay showcasing a double-bladed stance that the historical figure was also known for.

Onimusha: Way of the Swordoffers a take on gameplaythat seems to be a mix of reactive, intense swordplay, along with strategic positioning. In this trailer, Miyamoto is shown parrying several enemies before engaging in more aggressive combat. This makes it appear as if defensive options will be the primary focus here, since Miyamoto is often shown outnumbered in combat scenarios, needing to be crafty about his approach.

The gameplay also shows Miyamoto picking up a table and utilizing it as a shield, in addition to segments where he tosses enemies into breakable pieces of furniture. Miyamoto is shown using an Oni gauntlet in various sections of gameplay, but it seems like Capcom may be saving more of those details for later. Many of the cutscenes shown appear to go all-in on showing off a humorous, youthful Musashi Miyamoto who may have plenty of lessons to learn along his journey. Fans have pointed out that this game’s timeline appears to precedethe 2023Onimushaanime, which features a much older version of Musashi Miyamoto, although it’s not clear whether there is an explicit continuity between these entries.
