Hans Zimmer is a German film composer and music producer, among the most influential and innovative composers in the modern cinema. This is evident in the accolades he received, including multiple Oscars, Grammys, and Golden Globes. Zimmer has worked on multiple superhero movies, includingThe Dark Knighttrilogy,The Amazing Spider-Man 2,Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, X-Men: Dark Phoenix,andWonder Woman 1984.Zimmer appeared on the recent episode of theHappy Sad Confusedpodcastand the host said they wondered why he had never been part of an official MCU project. “Are you yourself kind of superheroed out? I’m kind of surprised the official MCU has never come calling or if they have, you’ve said no?” Josh Horowitz asked. Zimmer confirmed that Marvel Studios contacted him, but he declined because the “timing wasn’t great.” He said:
They have, and it was always — timing wasn’t great. And really, quite honestly, I’m looking for other things right now. Look, I’ve done the trifecta. I’ve done Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and Wonder Woman! I mean, what do you want me to do? Some of the minor characters? Probably yes.
Zimmer added it was “very arrogant” of him to share that. However,Marvel Studios President Kevin Feigewas so keen to work with him that Feige even asked him, “Hans, what are you complaining about?” Regardless, Zimmer hasn’t been involved in an MCU film yet. In a 2016 interview withBBC, Zimmer spoke about his experience working onBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.According to him, the project was “very hard for me to do.” He reportedly struggled “to try to find [a] new language.” As he reflected on his career, he realized that he had worked on several superhero flicks already and was done with them. “I didBatman Beginswith Chris [Nolan] 12 years ago, soThe Dark Knighttrilogy might be three movies to you, to me, it was 11 years of my life, then I did [Man of Steel], then I did this one,” Zimmer continued. “I have officially retired from the superhero business.”
Zimmer still worked on arranging music for other superhero movies after he announced his retirement from those projects in 2016 because three years later, he was the composer forX-Men: Dark Phoenixand was also involved inWonder Woman 1984. So, there are still chances that he might work on an MCU project in the future. However, fans should not keep their hopes high because Zimmer also mentioned in his recent interview that he was looking for “other things right now.” Also, the composer appeared satisfied with his superhero portfolio because he was involved in DCEU’s major superhero franchises –Superman, Batman,andWonder Woman. He was also happy to be involved in Sony’sSpider-Manand anX-Menmovie.
