Summary

Mega Evolutionis undoubtedly one of the most beloved mechanics in the entirePokemonfranchise, as it allows many popular (and a few not so popular) Pokemon to reach the next step in evolution and achieve a powerful new transformation. While Mega Evolution disappeared from the mainline games a long time ago, Game Freak will finally bring it back in the upcomingPokemon Legends: Z-A.

Naturally, this has led many fans to speculate on which creatures are going to get a Mega Evolution next, but there’s also another interesting side to that discussion. What about those that should never get one? Whether they were designed around specific gimmicks that would be ruined by the mechanic or because they are already extremely powerful on their own, the following Pokemon should definitely not be allowed to Mega Evolve anytime soon.

While it’s highly unlikely thatPikachuwill receive a Mega Evolution, seeing as this mechanic is usually reserved for fully-evolved Pokemon, Game Freak could still very easily make an exception for it and make a Mega Pikachu someday, even though it doesn’t really need one.

As the mascot of the entire franchise, Pikachu has already been getting enough attention and, thus, has received numerous alternate forms, like the cosplay variants fromOmega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, its Gigantamax form fromSword and Shieldand the Partner Pikachu fromPokemon Let’s Go, Pikachu!.Game Freak should give its evolution, Raichu, some love and create a Mega Evolution for it instead.

Eeveeis yet another Pokemon that doesn’t qualify for Mega Evolution because it’s not fully evolved but, seeing as it has recently become one of the franchise’s mascots alongside Pikachu, Game Freak could also make an exception and create a Mega Eevee. Even some fans want to see this become a reality, soEevee can get a new form that will let it harness the power of its eight evolutions, similar to its signature Z-Move, Extreme Evoboost.

Nevertheless, Eevee shouldn’t really get a new form, because it would be much more interesting and satisfying if Game Freak made Mega Evolutions for all eight Eevelutions instead. Just like Pikachu, Eevee is an adorable mascot that should remain unevolved as much as possible.

Some Pokemon are defined by their exclusive gimmicks, andDittois one of the most well-known examples of this trope. After all, it’s famous for being one of two Pokemon that can learn the move Transform, which allows it to transform into any other Pokemon standing in front of it, and use all of their moves and abilities in battle.

Ditto was specifically designed around its ability to transform into other creatures, so there really isn’t anything Game Freak can do to change or improve this unique gimmick with a Mega Evolution. On top of that, Ditto can use Transform to turn into any other Mega-Evolved Pokemon in the battlefield, so it pretty much already has access to the mechanic anyway.

Generation Four introducedArceus, the Alpha Pokemon who pretty much created the entire world and all the Pokemon that inhabit it. To no one’s surprise, it is incredibly strong, thanks to its 720 base stat total, its signature move, Judgement, and its exclusive ability, Multitype, which allows it to change into any type, depending on the plate it’s holding.

Because of this, giving Arceus a Mega Evolution would be unnecessarily complex. It’s already quite powerful, and it has access to every other Pokemon type, so it doesn’t need to get a new temporary evolution, not to mention that this could also very easily mess with its pre-existing lore and backstory. At the end of the day, however, Arceus was the main star ofPokemon Legends: Arceus, and it didn’t receive a new form in that game, so now it’s most likely never going to happen.

Competitive Pokemon players are very aware of how much of a beastLandoruscan be in battle. When it changes into its Therian Forme, it has a better stat spread which, coupled with its diverse move pool, excellent type combination and incredible ability, have helped it leave a huge mark on the competitive scene for many years.

Since Therian Forme already gave Landorus a significant advantage in battle (even though it doesn’t actually raise its stats), then it doesn’t need to also have a Mega Evolution that has the potential to make it even more overpowered. Of course, this also means that the other Forces of Nature –Tornadus,ThundurusandEnamorus– shouldn’t receive Mega Evolutions as well, but it doesn’t matter because they also have their own Therian Formes.

Pseudo-legendaries are some of the most powerful Pokemon in the franchise. Naturally, they always find their way into conversations about which Pokemon should be allowed to Mega Evolve. While it would be great to finally see Dragonite get a Mega Evolution, it can be argued that other potent Pokemon, like Garchomp or Metagross, didn’t need one in the first place.Dragapult, the pseudo-legendary of the Galar Region, certainly belongs to that category.

After all, it’s already extremely efficient in battle, thanks to its high Speed and Attack stats, its solid type of combination of Dragon and Ghost, the three useful abilities it has access to and its diverse move pool. A Mega Dragapult has the potential to break the game with its power, not to mention that it’s really hard (and almost impossible) to elevate this Pokemon’s unconventional design in a way that won’t make it look goofy or unserious. Dragapult is already perfect as it is, and it doesn’t need to be changed.

7Urshifu

An Overpowered Pokemon That Already Has Two Gigantamax Forms

Urshifuis yet another Pokemon that has terrorized the competitive scene, mainly because its two forms - Single Strike Style and Rapid Strike Style - have an ability calledUnseen Fist, which allows them to break through protective moves, like Protect, Detect, King’s Shield, etc. If that wasn’t enough, they both got separate Gigantamax Forms that made them an even bigger threat (both literally and figuratively).

Now that Dynamax and Gigantamax have been removed from the games, some fans are scared that Game Freak may want to compensate by giving Urshifu its own Mega Evolution. But this should never happen, because it would turn an already powerful Pokemon into an unstoppable beast, to an unfair extent. At least Gigantamax is temporary, while Mega Evolution remains active until the Pokemon faints or until the battle is over, so Urshifu should wait until its mechanic comes back in a future game instead.

8All The Box Art Legendaries

Game Freak Should Try To Avoid Another Mega Rayquaza Situation

“Box Art” Legendariesis the fan-made term used for importantLegendary Pokemon that are prominently featured on the covers ofPokemongames, like Ho-oh, Lugia, Dialga, Palkia, etc. Due to their importance in the mythology of their respective regions, these are always some of the most powerful creatures in the entire franchise, and they don’t need a boost in power.

The thing is that Game Freak already did exactly that with the “Box Art” Legendaries of Generation Three remakes,Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Not only did it give Groudon and Kyogre two new Primal Reversion forms (which work almost exactly like Mega Evolution), but it also created Mega Rayquaza, which quickly became one of the most overpowered Pokemon in the series. If they did this again with other infamously strong Legendaries - like Giratina, Zacian, Zekrom, Reshiram or Miraidon - the power cap of the games would become absurd, not to mention that it could ruin the Uber tier of the competitivePokemonscene.
