Summary
Sony has reported recordPlayStation 5sales for the period of October to December 2024. The encouraging sales update for thePS5comes alongside an increase in monthly active users and overall revenue for Sony’s gaming division.
Ever since its launch in 2020, the PS5 has comfortably taken the lead in terms of sales figures compared to its closest rival, the Xbox Series X/S. The current-generation system has more or less matched the PS4’s sales pace so far, and Sony even announced last year that thePS5 has accrued more profit for the companythan every prior console generation. Now, Sony has announced PS5 sales data for holiday 2024, and it looks quite impressive.
During its recentQ3 FY2024 earnings call, Sony revealed that thePS5 sold 9.5 million unitsin the three months between Jun 08, 2025, and June 15, 2025. This marks a year-on-year increase of 1.3 million units and a record quarter performance for the PS5 generation.Lifetime PS5 saleshave now surpassed75 million, and on a launch-aligned basis, the current-gen machine is only 1.5 million units behind the PS4. As mentioned above, though, Sony is raking in much more profit from the PS5. It’s also worth noting that Sony is bundling PS5 and PS5 Pro sales numbers in the aforementioned data.
PS5 Holiday 2024 Official Sales Figures
Therefore, it’s difficult to ascertain how well the$700 PS5 Pro is faring commercially. Convoluted sales split aside, Sony says that PS5 shipments are in line with the company’s running target of 18 million consoles sold by the end of March 2025. Monthly active users across PlayStation services were also up 5% year-on-year at129 million, and Sony’s gaming business saw a 37% spike in profit compared to the same period in 2023. Rather astonishingly, PlayStation grossed$30.8 billion in revenuefrom January to December 2024, slightly outpacing the combined revenues of Xbox and Nintendo for the calendar year.
Despite recent stumbles like thecancelation of two PlayStation live-service games, financial outlooks for the gaming giant seem to be very positive. In light of the record-breaking commercial performance, Sony has raised its profit forecast for the PlayStation division by 2% for the entirety of FY2024. The upcoming fiscal year is shaping up to be even more profitable for PlayStation thanks to high-profile releases likeGrand Theft Auto 6,Ghost of Yotei,Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and more.
