Summary

Evidence continues to mount that Generation 6 starters Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie will be thePokemon Legends: Z-Astarters.Pokemon Legends: Z-Awas revealed last year with a brief CG trailer that confirmed some important details about the upcoming game while also leaving a lot of unanswered questions.

The firstPokemon Legends: Z-Atrailer confirmed that the new game will be set in the Kalos region’s Lumiose City. A handful of returning Pokemon were confirmed forZ-A, and it was also revealed thatMega Evolutions would be making a comeback. Otherwise, much about whatPokemon Legends: Z-Ais bringing to the table has remained shrouded in mystery, including the starter Pokemon that players will have to choose from.

The Pokemon Company has not revealed thePokemon Legends: Z-Astarters at the time of this writing, but the theory that the starters will be Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie seems likelier by the day. For the uninitiated, Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie were the starters inPokemon X and Y, the two games that take place inLumiose City’s Kalos region. Reputable leakers have already hinted that the trio would be returning forPokemon Legends: Z-A, but recent Pokemon World Championships 2025 artwork highlighting Fennekin and Chespin has been taken by some as even more evidence thatX and Ystarters are coming back.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A Rumored Starters

SincePokemon Legends: Z-Ais set in the Kalos region, many may have assumed that Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie would be the starters for the game, but this actually bucks the trend started byArceus.Pokemon Legends: Arceusis set in a far-past Sinnoh region, yet doesn’t feature the Sinnoh region Pokemon as its starters. Some assumed thatPokemon Legends: Z-Awould do something similar and feature a random assortment of starters from various regions, but it doesn’t seem like that will be the case.

Now, even if Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie turn out to be thePokemon Legends: Z-Astarters, it doesn’t mean they will be exactly as fans remember. It’s been teased by reputablePokemonleakers that the trio will have something different about them. It’s possible they will have different final evolutions, similar to the starters fromArceus, but it’s also possible that they will instead have fresh Mega Evolutions. All fans can do for now is speculate, though the wait for more concrete answers is nearly at an end.
