Later this year, hit social deduction game and viral sensationAmong Uswill release a 3D version for PC players. Aptly titledAmong Us 3D,this re-imagining of the hit multiplayer game where innocent crewmates work together to seek out impostors willallow PC players to connect withAmong Us VRplayers for the first time. At the same time,Among Us VRwill be rebranding toAmong Us 3D.Among Us 3Dwas primarily developed by Schell Games in collaboration with Innersloth, the original creators of the 2D version of the game.

At an event officially announcingAmong Us 3D,Game Rant spoke to members of theSchell Gamesteam: project director Ryan Hall, lead producer Bryan Gardiner, and associate product marketing manager Adam Kuta. The Schell team discussed the challenges that came with bringingAmong Us 3Dto PC and making the three-dimensional, first person version of the game available to players without a VR headset. While the team was excited about the launch and couldn’t wait to see PC and VR players enjoyingAmong Us 3Dtogether, they admitted that the development journey was not without its hurdles.

The Greatest Challenge Was The Creation Of A HUD

The PC version ofAmong Us 3Dwill feature a heads-up display (HUD) that players can view at all times while in-game. The HUD will display key information such as the player’s name, their status as crewmate or impostor, the list of tasks that must be completed in order for crewmates to win the round, and news about recent body discoveries and emergency meetings. The HUD will also feature a mini-map, allowing players to more easily navigate around the spaceship, planet, or other environment in which they are playing. Ryan Hall explained the team’s reasoning behind adding a HUD toAmong Us 3D

“It’s the kind of heads-up display you might expect in a first-person PC game. It doesn’t work in VR, but PC needs it.”

When Schell Games was first working onAmong Us VR,which launched in 2022, they initially considered adding a HUD such as the one3Dwill feature. However, Hall and Gardiner ultimately determined that such a display would be “disorienting” to players, and not conducive to the frequent movement that typically accompanies playing games in VR. In order to “avoid discomfort,” the idea was scrapped, but it was re-instated forAmong Us 3Dto better match the standard design elements of a first-person PC game.

Among Us 3DIs A Big Step Forward For The Game

While the team did encounter challenges such as the creation of a HUD, ultimately, both Innersloth and Schell are extremely happy about the state ofAmong Us 3D.They feel that it represents a step forward for the game after several years of “playing catch-up” followingAmong Us’unexpected surge of popularity in 2020during the COVID-19 pandemic. The developers are also excited about future plans for3D,including the release of more cosmetics, in-game roles and game modes as well as collaborations with other media properties.

“Among Usis about connection,” said Innersloth community director Victoria Tran, discussing her own enthusiasm for the upcoming launch ofAmong Us 3D.With3D,that connection can now occur in new ways - it will be compatible with all current versions ofAmong Us VR,which is available for Steam,Meta Questand Meta Quest 2, PICO 4, and more. The team also plans to host more limited-time events - including the aforementioned collaborations - to further encourage both PC and VR players to experience the world ofAmong Ustogether in a brand-new way.
