The 1999 Hunter X Hunter Anime Was Going To Have A Very Different Ending

Killua Kills Gon In This Ending

As many fans ofHxHknow, the series had an adaptation prior to the very famous one that happened in 2011. The 1999 adaptation was the first timeHxHwas made into an anime, and back then, there was even less content to animate.

Due to that, the studio animating it was planning to make their own ending to wrap the story, similar to what happened with the originalFull Metal Alchemist: Brotherhoodanime, but that never happened because Togashi,HxH’smangaka, rejected it.

Instead, the story of the 1999 anime just stopped when it ran out of content, never to return again, besides for a few OVAs later on. To be specific, this was going to happen in 2001, and around that time,Togashi hadn’t even concluded the York Shin Arc in the manga, which is what this ending would be for.

What was planned for this ending in the 1999 anime would have been quite bizarre for many characters, and all this was planned by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, the director of the anime. There are even storyboards of what would happen available.

To start off, Kurapika’s story would conclude with him killing the Phantom Troupe, and in doing so, he would lose one of his eyes, and then die.

Saddened by Kurapika’s death, Gon would return to Whale Island, his hometown, where he would mourn. There, he would find both Kite and Ging.Killua, on the other hand, would return to Kukuroo Mountain. 7 years would pass after this.

After that, Killua would head to Gon’s home island, Whale Island, with the goal of killing Ging. Gon, of course, stood against Killua in his goal to kill his father, but Killua ended up killing Gon.

This is how the 1999 HxH anime would’ve ended, had Togashi not opposed this ending, which obviously goes against his vision.
