Summary
Squid GameSeason 3 will be wrapping up Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) story arc and bring back some of the characters that fans missed in Season 2. The return of the controversial characters could possibly answer one of the wildest fan theories about the series.
Squid Gamehas attractedcountless major rumorsfrom ardent fans who couldn’t wait to find answers about the characters that piqued their interest. When the South Korean psychological survival thriller dropped in 2021, many suspected Gi-hun’s relationship with Player 001, Oh Il-nam (O Yeong-su.), after the former said he doesn’t drink milk and the latter shared that his son was also lactose intolerant. The same fan theory was recycled when Season 2’s Player 001, Young-il /In-ho, aka The Frontman (Lee Byung-hun), gave his milk to the pregnant woman, saying he doesn’t drink it. However, that’s not the wildest fan theory there is. Another suggests that one of the players in the second season was part of the game – as one of the VIPs.
One wild fan theory involves Player 100, Im Jeong-dae (Song Young-chang), who joined the deadly game after incurring a 10 billion debt. Such an amount was so huge that no ordinary person could borrow that much. Thus, some viewers speculated that he could be among the VIPs — a group of wealthy and masked elites in the series.Squid GameSeason 3would feature the VIPs, who were noticeably missing in the second season. The VIPs returncould potentially seal the deal about Jeong-dae’s family background, per ScreenRant. The outlet added that for his age, Player 100 is doing well in the competition. It was also noticeable how determined he was to win and continue with the competition despite witnessing countless deaths. The violence didn’t bother him, which fueled the rumors that he was familiar with the game because he watched it prior to joining it. He probably ended up with the debt from betting and losing on a previous game.
Jeong-dae is portrayed as greedy and someone who prefers more players to die to increase the amount of money they could take home. In one scene following the second game, he expressed dismay after realizing that many survived because it meant that their share of the prize money would be reduced. From his demeanor, he appeared to be someone from an affluent family. InSquid GameSeason 2, Episode 3, it was revealed that his total debt was 10 billion. The other participants were shocked, and they started to look around to find him, interested in seeing the man who owed the most in the group. He didn’t back off and even told the crowd, “What are you looking at? [Do] you think it’s easy to get loans that large? They don’t give out 10 billion to just anyone.” His statement suggested that, unlike most players, he didn’t come from poverty.
While the theory that Jeong-dae could be among the VIPs is wild, it’s also possible. He probably had businesses and properties worth billions for him to borrow such a considerable amount. There was no backstory as to why he ended up with such a mountain of debt, but if he was addicted to gambling, his money could easily run out. If he used to be among the VIPs, the show could make use of the VIP’s return to support it. There are countless fan theories about the series, includingGi-hun becoming the next Front Man. Fortunately, these questions will soon be answered.
Squid GameSeason 3 will premiere on Netflix on Jun 08, 2025.
