What Can Audiences Expect FromFairy Tale?

Fairy Talewas Stephen King’s first true fantasy novel in ages, and comes in at just over 600 pages, so there’s no shortage of material for fans to engross themselves in.As the author of 65 novels and over 200 short stories, it’s safe to say King knows what he’s doing. In fact, he is one of the most prolific writers of his generation, particularly when it comes to horror. There are no shortage of adaptations of Stephen King stories, with the most famous probably being theItfilms. King is also expected to produce on the series, which should stand fans in good stead. Moreover,Fairy Taleis highly rated on Goodreads and Amazon, with readers finding it entertaining throughout, and full of detail, both in its realistic and fantastical parts.

The novel draws on classic fairy tale tropes, like a magical world battling between good and evil, and the traditional quest element, as well as referencing other fairy tales throughout. There’s also significant Lovecraftian influence, which should perhaps be expected from a famous horror writer, and a sophisticated analysis of the human condition through its central coming of age story. It makes sense that the initial plans to adaptFairy Taleas a feature film were shelved; there’s simply too much material to fit into a two-hour production.Instead, the ten-episode series should provide enough space to explore the tale’s many themes thoroughly.

At the center of this adaptation is Paul Greengrass, who wrote the original script and expected to direct the project when it was initially considered as a feature. Greengrass’ specialty seems to be action, having directed a number of theJason Bournefilms previously. Also associated with the project is J.H. Wyman, who is best known for working on the sci-fi dramaAlmost Human.

Fantasy Fans Need New Material

It’s been a while since there was a truly original fantasy show available for viewers - especially an independent one. WithFairy Talecoming from A24, there’s hope this could be exactly what the genre needs.A24 is known primarily for the films it distributes, but it has found success with a number of programs in recent years, likeEuphoria,Ramy, andBeef. Taking on an anticipated fantasy adaptation likeFairy Talefeels like a step further into the mainstream for the distribution company.

A lot of recent fantasy forays audiences have seen on TV have been spin-offs of earlier shows.House of the DragonandThe Rings of Powerfollow on fromGame of ThronesandLord of the Rings, respectively. Both shows originated from hugely popular novels; the iconic George R. Martin’sA Song of Ice and Fireseries and J.R.R. Tolkein’sLord of the Ringsseries, meaning there was huge anticipation before the shows even emerged. Naturally, fan bases as big as these are never going to be wholly satisfied by any adaptation, but it seems as though recently fan expectations have entirely eclipsed the actual productions.Fans have complained about issues like pacing, production issues, and deviation from the source material in these shows, leaving them unsatisfied and itching for something new to fulfill their fantasy needs.

Creators have to juggle good storytelling with the correct amount of fan service, and this gets harder as a fan base becomes more established. Hopefully, a fresh series, especially one with its own unique world, can use this lack of expectation to exert more freedom in producing a great show. While details about production and casting remain under wraps, anticipation is steadily growing for what is sure to be a popular show.
