Nightdive Studiosfirst announcedSystem Shock 2: Enhanced Editionin August 2019, as part of its celebrations commemorating the game’s 20th anniversary. On that occasion, the developer said that the remaster would be coming “soon.” Six years later, this promise hasn’t exactly panned out, although the project is finally exhibiting some signs of life.

In mid-February 2025, Nightdive Studios announced that the upcoming game dropped the “enhanced edition” part of its title and will instead be calledSystem Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. The Vancouver, Washington-based company also revealed that it has expanded the remaster’s list of target platforms, which now includes the Switch. The upcoming title will hence become the firstSystem Shockgameto ever make its way to a Nintendo console. The previously confirmed Switch 2 backward compatibility will ensure thatSystem Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remasteris playable on Nintendo’s next console as well.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster Release Date Coming in March 2025

Nightdive Studios confirmed that the game’s release date is finally on the horizon, committing to announcing it during thenext Game Developers Conference. The 2025 iteration of GDC is scheduled to take place between March 17 and 22.System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster’s release date is planned to be revealed during the event’s Future Game Show Spring Showcase, a livestream scheduled for March 20. Given the timing of the newly confirmed announcement, it seems likely that the long-awaited game will debut sometime in 2025. As a result,System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remasterwill seemingly launch closer to the original game’s 26th anniversary rather than its 25th.

Nightdive Studios hasn’t elaborated on what caused the remaster’s development to drag on for as long as it did. While modern game development can be unpredictable, the American studio has also been super busy in recent times, putting out five remasters in 2024 alone. That’s a lot of work for a company that only employs around 40 people as of 2025, according to LinkedIn data.

Apart from the Switch,System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remasterwill also launch for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. No pricing information has yet been attached to the project.
