6Aliens Vs. Zombies: Invasion

Fight For Control Of Earth

Aliens vs. Zombies: Invasionis atower defense gamein which the player character is an alien in a flying saucer trying to stave off a zombie invasion. The player must protect the alien base by upgrading turrets, enhancing the spaceship, strengthening the alien base, and consuming zombies.

The flying saucer can not only consume zombies and the upgrade cubes that they drop, but it can also consume resources from the surrounding countryside (including unsuspecting cows and horses). It’s a fun little game to pass the time, but navigating the winding paths of the map gets a bit frustrating as the levels increase in difficulty.

5The Walking Zombie 2

A “Hero” Is Born

The Walking Zombie 2is a survival shooter about a man born into a zombie apocalypse with charming polygonal graphics. It has a strong narrative throughline and the gameplay is of sufficient complexity to keep players engaged for hours. The player character is immune to zombies and is therefore the perfect person to face the hordes.

Unfortunately, ads have increased recently, which makes this a tricky recommendation. That said, the quality of the game itself is great, and it has a dry sense of humor that is hard to convey in a mobile game like this. Just beware, the ads can be a little overwhelming.

4Zombotron Re-Boot

Survive Planet Zombotron

Zombotron Re-Bootis an action platformer in which the player must take out zombies using a variety of weapons… and hats. It’s a remaster of a Flash game that has enormous sentimental value for some. The main character is a mercenary stranded on a hostile planet populated by zombies.

The goofy 2D art style seems like a natural evolution from the original Flash game and the developer is in the process of adding more story elements. Judging from interactions on the developer’s itch.io page, the game is still being refined and reworked, but it is already a fun little mobile platformer with plenty to recommend.

Protect The Bus

Dead Ahead: Zombie Warfareis another tower defense game; except this time the tower is on wheels. Players must defend the bus and destroy blockades with a team of expendable allies. Allies have different skills and hit points, and units can be purchased during encounters using ‘courage.’

It has a fun horror pixel art style that is very evocative of90s-style point-and-click games. The zombies in this game come in a huge variety of forms, which are gradually introduced as the player progresses. Levels are unlocked by exploring the map, which consumes fuel, and by earning stars from completing blockades without damaging the bus. It’s an extremely engaging game that rewards strategy and persistence.

Death Road to Canadais a randomly generated zombie-infested road trip. It’s a clever pixel-art action RPG that has elements ofsurvival horror. The player must manage the health and well-being of their party and can recruit new members as they go. The character creator also means that players can customize their team.

Humans aren’t the only team members players can recruit as party members, with dogs and pigs also being available. After a party member dies, the player will continue to guide the rest of the party through the zombie apocalypse. Players can also swap which character they are controlling. It has insane replayability, but the controls can be a nightmare in more intense situations.

Dysmantleis a beautifully designed survival game with a highlydestructible environment. The player character has ventured out of their bunker into a post-apocalyptic wilderness. The goal is to get off the island in one piece. There is crafting, farming, and combat, as well as an underlying mystery to solve. All players have to begin with is a crowbar and backpack. Upgrading the crowbar allows players to destroy stronger obstacles that act as barriers to progress.

The narrative is by far the most well-crafted on this list, with environmental storytelling and radio broadcasts that fill in the lore of the world. It has hours and hours of engaging and variable gameplay, a bit like having a full-scale survival game on mobile. It’s very well-optimized for a game this elaborate. However, it can still be quite demanding on a phone’s resources and the price point for the initial purchase may put free-to-play gamers off.
