It feels like every major franchise is crossing over with the video game space right now, with the likes ofFortniteandCall of Dutytaking all sorts of IP for a spin. Now,Destiny 2is doing the exact same thing with its own set ofStar Wars-themedcosmetics. Players can get armor, emotes, and other various goodies for theirDestiny 2adventures right now. And while that crossover is cool to see, it should only be the start of players' MMOStar Warsadventure.
TheStar Warsfranchise is no stranger to MMOs, as titles likeStar Wars: GalaxiesandStar Wars: The Old Republichave brought players across the galaxy. However, the franchise has yet to attempt its very ownDestiny-like experience, and that really needs to change. TheseStar Warscosmetics inDestiny 2help to show the sheer potential of an MMO-adjacent experience for the Disney franchise, but hopefully, a studio will go all in on the concept.
Destiny x Star Wars Should Just Be the Start of What is to Come
TheStar Warsfranchise has had an extensive history with video games, with titles that have covered a wide variety of genres. Players have gotten to explorea LEGO-fied version ofStar Wars, they have shot their way through the galaxy’s many battlefields withStar Wars: Battlefront, they have gone on exciting adventures through the likes ofStar Wars: The Force UnleashedandStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and have even taken to the stars withStar Wars: Jedi StarfighterandStar Wars: Squadrons. On the MMO side, players have gone on all sorts of adventures withStar Wars: The Old RepublicandStar Wars: Galaxies.
Star Warshas had a couple of massive MMO experiences, but nothing has really compared to the likes ofDestiny.Star Wars: Galaxiesshut downin 2011, with only private emulator projects letting it live on. On the other hand,Star Wars: The Old Republichas seemingly been a success, as it has gotten a slew of content updates since it launched. However, it is much more of a standard MMO than a live-service shooter, and based on the success of titles likeStar Wars: Battlefront, the franchise was born for first-person shooters.
A Destiny-like Star Wars MMO Seems Like an Easy Win
Destiny 2has now given players a look into whataStar WarsFPS MMOcould look like, so hopefully a studio goes all in on the concept sometime soon. Players could take on the role of a simple soldier in one of the many factions, fight their way across multiple planets, and make their mark on the galaxy. It could take place during one of the three trilogies, highlight events set in between some of the films, or explore a completely new timeline altogether. As the franchise grows, so too can the stories and worlds within, making for an unforgettable and ever-expanding adventure.
There is a reason thatDestiny 2has been so successfulfor Bungie, because many find that its core gameplay loop is extremely satisfying. So, taking said gameplay and moving it to theStar Warsgalaxy seems like an easy win. Of course, the game also has to deliver a strong story, the worlds have to be fun to explore, and there needs to be a treasure trove of content waiting to be conquered. But, if a video game studio is able to nail all that down, then players could be in for an exciting treat.
There is no shortage ofStar Warsvideo games on the horizon, but none of them seem to be aDestiny-like MMO. However, if players flock to this newDestiny 2xStar Warscrossover, then hopefully someone starts charting one out. While it is nice to get this crossover content, nothing compares to a fully-fledged game and now feels like the perfect time to deliver one.
