Summary
One of the most beloved shows of 2024 just happened to be a show that was based on a comic book character. The Penguingot a tong of eyeballs in part because the story was a more realistic take on a comic book villain that can be quite unrealistic at times. What really madeThe Penguinas popular as it was, was the portrayal of the titular character by Colin Farrell.
Farrell did such a great job playing The Penguin that the awards have come pouring in, including a Golden Globe and Screen Writer’s Guild trophy. However, hearing the actor tell it,playing Oz Cobbwasn’t always a good time. The actor has actually talked quite a bit about how putting on the suit to play The Penguin was taxing. Getting into the headspace of someone who is as a bad a person as Cobb was also hard to do. And because of that, Farrell has made some comments that could end up being the finaldeath blow for any chances ofThe Penguincoming back for a Season 2.
Does James Gunn Want To Keep Going With The Penguin?
During an appearance where DCU chief James Gunn was rolling out his plans for DC over the next few years, he made one thing very clear. While there has been a push from some fans to simplymove Robert Pattinson over to the DCUfrom the Matt Reeves-universe,Gunn made it clear that wasn’t happening.
Gunn’s comments that he’s had conversations about Pattinson, but not “serious conversations,” hammers home that he’snot close to consideringThe Batmanactorfor the DCU. And while Gunn obviously still likes what Matt Reeves is doing withThe Batmanand looking forward tofinally seeingThe Batman Part 2, one has to wonder if he might be ready to leave that Elseworlds story.
Gunn istalking : The Brave and the Boldand that could mean that he’s ready to move onto the actor who will be Bruce Wayne in the DCU. And it feels like once that actor starts making his appearance on the big screen, thatGunn isn’t going to want to have any sort of confusion over who is the real Dark Knight.
Colin Farrell Could Offer Final Shovel Of Dirt On The Penguin Season 2
If Gunn is sending signals thatThe Batman Part IIwill be the endof the Reeves-averse, then Farrell isn’t exactly pushing back on the potential end of things. Speaking after his latest award win, Farrell was specifically asked if he wanted aThe PenguinSeason 2 and the answer couldn’t be seen as those desperate for a return to Gotham through the eyes of the iconic villain.
“I would hate to, just because of a quote-unquote success, have to go again and for it to be a diluted version of what people seem to feel it is, I’m in no rush. I have no deep desire to do it.”
The quote fromVarietycan be paired up with comments directly after shooting for The Penguin Season 1 ended when he was pretty clear that he wasconflicted about ever playing Cobb again. While he’s walked those comments back and said that he wanted to step into the character’s rather unique shoes, he’s stepping backward again.
While he’s walked those comments back and said that he wanted to step into the character’s rather unique shoes, he’s stepping backward again.
Of course, there are plenty of fans who think that whatFarrell was really sayingwas that while he does indeed want to be the character again, there would have to be a real quality to a Season 2. Certainly, everyone can agree that is something that absolutely needs to happen. If there is aThe PenguinSeason 2 it needs to be as high quality as Season 1.
Is Leaving The Penguin Unfinished Really An Option?
If there’s anyconcrete reason to believethatThe PenguinSeason 2 is coming back, it’s because James Gunn wouldn’t want to leave such a popular story out there hanging. With an entire season spent building up Oz Cobb as the king of Gotham crime, and with the chance thatThe Batman Part 2will focus on other villains, it seems likeThe PenguinSeason 2 would need to finish the story. Perhaps with a downfall.
For now, all of this is still very much up in the air. However, there’s been plenty of odds signals being sent out aboutThe PenguinSeason 2. What if those signals were because it really was always something that was doubtful. Farrell could even be covering his bases by showing he’s conflicted about the situation. If such a respected actor isn’t willing to push Gunn to greenlight the project, does it really have a chance?
